Raising reptiles gives you "goosebumps" looking at them, with a revenue of 4 billion VND/year

(Dan Tri) - Starting to build a farm to raise reptiles, a farmer in Lam Dong unexpectedly earned billions of dong each year.

In My Duc commune, Da Huoai district, Lam Dong, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung (39 years old), has become a pioneer in snake farming, a new economic model with great potential.

In 2023, realizing the effectiveness of raising this reptile, Mr. Dung invested in buying 0.5 hectares of land in Lien Hoa village, My Duc commune, to build a farm of nearly 0.3 hectares.

Mr. Dung's farm is divided into many different zones, with wooden cages installed to raise 10,000 rat snakes.

According to Mr. Dung, the climate in Da Huoai district, with an average temperature of 23-32 degrees Celsius, is very suitable for the growth and development of snakes. This allows his family to raise snakes continuously for 12 months, a great advantage compared to other provinces and cities affected by cold winters.

Regarding nutrition, Mr. Dung has cooperated with poultry breeding companies to buy discarded chicks and ducklings to feed the snakes. After 12 months of care, his family can harvest the snakes to supply to restaurants.

Not only raising snakes for commercial purposes, Mr. Dung's family also develops breeding of rat snakes, providing breeding stock for households that want to raise snakes for economic development.

Currently, commercial snakes are sold for between 400,000 and 500,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 700,000 VND/kg. Seedlings cost between 150,000 and 200,000 VND/kg and molted snake skins are sold for 200,000 VND/kg.

In 2024, Mr. Dung's farm brought in revenue of 4 billion VND, with profit after deducting expenses reaching over 2.5 billion VND.

Mr. Dung plans to expand the farm to raise 15,000 to 20,000 snakes per year and develop cobra farming to meet market demand.

The leaders of My Duc Commune People's Committee highly appreciated the economic efficiency of Mr. Dung's family's snake farming model and encouraged its development.

According to the leader of My Duc Commune People's Committee, snake farming is not only suitable for local climate conditions but also less affected by diseases, and has a good consumer market, helping breeders have the opportunity to get rich.

Currently, Mr. Dung's farm creates jobs for 3 workers with a salary of 10 million VND/person/month.
