Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/06/2023

The patient is VTT residing in Dong Da District, Hanoi . Before being hospitalized for lung tumor treatment, the patient's health was completely normal. When transferred to Hanoi Oncology Hospital, through imaging tests, doctors determined that this tumor, measuring 11 x 10 cm, had compressed and collapsed almost the entire left lung, adhered to the pleura, pericardium and relatively thick pleural fluid. The patient said that the lung tumor was discovered when the patient was scanned to assess his health when he had an appendectomy.

Malignant lung tumor causing collapsed lung in patient

Dr. Phan Le Thang, Head of the Surgery Unit at the request of Hanoi Oncology Hospital, said that due to not being detected early, the lung tumor had grown quite large, with many blood vessels, causing angiogenesis, and adhesion to surrounding organs, making the surgery difficult to stop bleeding and remove the tumor. If not detected in time, the tumor would grow and invade both lungs, causing difficulty breathing and respiratory failure, making the surgery even more difficult.

"In addition, thoracic surgeries have a narrow incision, only a small incision can be made between the ribs to insert surgical instruments to cut the tumor and stop the bleeding. Therefore, the surgeon needs experience and high professional skills to be able to perform the operations accurately, avoiding massive blood loss that threatens the patient's life," Dr. Thang shared.

After two hours of surgery, the entire malignant tumor was removed. With the experience of the surgical team, the surgery went smoothly, and the patient did not need any additional blood transfusion. Three days after surgery, the patient had the drainage tube removed and his health was stable.

Pathology results showed that the tumor was a type AB thymic malignant tumor. Thymic tumors are rarer than other cancers and are almost asymptomatic in the early stages. However, if diagnosed and treated promptly, the chance of survival is very high.

Doctor Thang recommends that people should have regular health check-ups to promptly detect abnormalities in the body, especially with some diseases that develop silently and only show signs when the disease is in its late stages.
