Many areas have potential risk of water pollution.
Da Do River is nearly 50 km long, with the task of supplying irrigation and drainage water for agricultural production and aquaculture; supplying and draining water for industrial parks and residential areas on an area of about 33,000 hectares of 5 areas of the old districts of An Lao, Kien Thuy, Kien An, Duong Kinh, and Do Son.
Every year, the river also supplies about 35 million m3 of raw water to clean water factories. According to the general planning of Hai Phong city, the Da Do irrigation system is identified as the central freshwater reservoir of the city to serve the development of socio -economic sectors. However, according to the assessment of the authorities, the water source of the Da Do river is showing signs of pollution, due to domestic wastewater from residential areas, craft villages, small-scale industrial production facilities and some cemeteries located along the river.
According to Mr. Dong Quang Duc, Deputy General Director of Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, through inspection along the system, it shows that there are currently 4 wastewater discharge locations that are assessed to have a high risk of polluting the Da Do River water source.
That is the An Lao town area (now An Lao commune), about 6,080 households discharge waste directly into the irrigation canal flowing into the Bai Vet level 1 canal, discharging into the main canal of Da Do river, with an average volume of about 912 m3 /day and night.
Wastewater from the industrial park in Cau Vang 2 area along National Highway 10 (from Cau Vang 2 to Quang Thanh intersection) and residential areas of Quang Trung and Quang Hung communes (now An Quang commune) is discharged directly into the main canal of Da Do river, with a volume of about 439 m3 /day and night.
In Cau Nguyet area, there are 2 "hot spots" discharging wastewater directly into Da Do river with high risk of pollution: Nguyet Ang village, Thai Son commune (now An Lao commune) and Hai Phong Social Protection Center discharging into level 1 and level 2 canals and through Ong Tam culvert discharging into Da Do river affecting the quality of water supply to Cau Nguyet water plant, with a volume of about 392 m3 /day and night.
In An Khanh commune, untreated wastewater from 4,154 households living on both sides of the canal flows into the Cau Nguyet pumping station and directly into the Da Do river, with a volume of about 623 m3 /day and night. Water quality in the Cau Nguyet area is seriously affected, and at times the quality of water supplied to the Cau Nguyet Water Plant is not guaranteed.
In the old Kien An and Kien Thuy areas, untreated wastewater is also discharged directly into the canals flowing into the river with a large volume of wastewater, causing severe pollution of the canals.
Typically, the Do Vo and Thang Loi canals in Kien An area have black, thick, foul-smelling water that pollutes the environment. In addition, the Da Do River water source is polluted by upstream water sources. According to the monitoring results in June 2024 at the upstream of Trung Trang sluice, the Nitrite content increased 2.58 times, COD increased 2.25 times, the total Comlifor exceeded 1.5 times the permissible standards for surface water quality and pollution due to agricultural production activities such as pesticides, plant protection drugs, etc.

Many solutions to improve water quality
To protect the water quality of Da Do River, recently Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. has implemented many solutions.
In particular, continue to clear and widen the riverbed, close the Da Do bank; reinforce the unrenovated bank section; upgrade the remaining sluice under the Da Do bank, completely collect the cut-out locations on the riverbank to close the Da Do riverbank; clear the old encroachment violations that still exist; set up boundary markers for irrigation works according to the Law on Irrigation.
The company recommends that the city renovate and upgrade the Trung Trang culvert to increase the capacity of water intake into the system. Renovate and upgrade the Quang Hung and Bat Trang pumping stations to pump the system and drain water during heavy rains and floods. Renovate and upgrade the Co Tieu 2 culvert to ensure the reversal of the Da Do river water source. Renovate and upgrade the degraded culverts under the dike: Ngo, Muoi, Cau Dong, Canh Tay, Hang La, Tham Len, and Xuong Gach culverts to ensure prevention of saltwater intrusion and leakage into the system and to prevent natural disasters.
In addition, the company proactively researches the collection and diversion of wastewater from areas at risk of pollution in An Lao town, Cau Nguyet area, Kien An, Nui Doi. Installs automatic water level, salinity, and rainfall monitoring equipment to digitize and synthesize data sets to study and forecast factors affecting water reserves and quality. Applying science and technology in the management and operation of irrigation systems.
