Nick Kyrgios and the unlikely wish of Novak Djokovic

(NLDO) - The Australian tennis player hoped that Novak Djokovic would win his 8th Wimbledon title and retire, but Sinner shattered that hope.

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic have become close friends over the past few years. Kyrgios also hopes Djokovic can retire after winning his eighth Wimbledon title.

Djokovic gets older, younger opponents get stronger

However, that possibility is increasingly remote as the 38-year-old tennis player faces the burden of age, while young opponents like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are getting stronger.

In the semi-finals last night (July 11), Sinner became the only player besides Rafael Nadal to defeat Djokovic five times in a row. The match was not too tense as Sinner won quickly 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in less than two hours.

That shattered the dream of Kyrgios, who lost to Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final. "I want Novak to win Wimbledon, that would be great. And then he retires here," Kyrgios told the UTS Tour before the match.

Sharing the same opinion with Kyrgios, coach Patrick Mouratoglou - who used to coach Serena Williams, also expressed: "That would be the best ending. I also admire him very much. Novak is great.

What I like about Novak is that he is a rare champion who dares to live true to his beliefs, even when the whole world is against him. That is extraordinary."

Djokovic's arduous road to conquering Grand Slam 25

Djokovic has taken a very different path from many current tennis stars, dieting, practicing yoga and accepting controversy by refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, which led to his deportation at an Australian airport in 2022.

Djokovic believes that these things help him maintain his form to continue competing for Grand Slam titles in his 30s. However, with the strong rise of Sinner and Alcaraz, Djokovic's path to conquering his 25th Grand Slam is increasingly difficult.

Whether Djokovic will be ready to hang up his racket before reaching that milestone remains a question mark. Previously, the veteran tennis player revealed that he wanted to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, when he will be over 41 years old, while Sinner and Alcaraz will be at the peak of their careers.
