Congressmen propose putting Trump's image on $250 bill

(CLO) A group of Republican lawmakers led by Congressman Joe Wilson (South Carolina) is pushing a bill to put President Donald Trump's image on the new $250 bill.

In a post on social media X, Mr Wilson said inflation had destroyed the economy , forcing American families to carry more money. “The most valuable bill for the most valuable president,” he wrote, claiming Mr Trump’s fiscal policies deserved recognition.

The proposal not only honors Mr. Trump, but also calls for federal law to be amended to allow living presidents to appear on U.S. currency.

Mr. Wilson's bill, officially titled the "Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act," if passed, would require the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design and issue a $250 bill with Mr. Trump's likeness.

Currently, however, federal law prohibits any living person from appearing on legal tender U.S. currency. This bill could change that rule, paving the way for any former president to appear on paper money.

Wilson's proposal was co-sponsored by several Republican lawmakers, including Ralph Norman (South Carolina), Diana Harshbarger (Tennessee) and Darrell Issa (California).

This is not the only Republican initiative to honor Mr. Trump when he returns to the White House. Previously, some lawmakers have proposed carving Mr. Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore, making his birthday a federal holiday or even amending the 22nd Amendment to allow Mr. Trump to run for a third term.

Currently, the United States has seven denominations of paper money in circulation, including $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills. Higher denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000, were discontinued in 1969 due to lack of use. The creation of a $250 bill is unprecedented.

The Treasury Department has not yet responded to the proposal. Under current procedures, people who appear on U.S. currency are typically those who have made significant contributions to history and are deceased. Changing the law to put a sitting president on paper money could be controversial.
