Mr Trump’s campaign has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission in Washington demanding an immediate investigation into “illegal foreign contributions made by the British Labour Party and received by Ms Harris”.
The complaint cites media reports and a LinkedIn post by Sofia Patel, the head of the Labour Party. Patel wrote that “nearly 100 current and former Labour staff will travel to the US in the coming weeks to support Democratic Vice President Harris.” Patel’s post has since been deleted. “Those investigating foreign interference in our elections need to look beyond a LinkedIn post,” the complaint reads. The UK Labour Party regards the US Democrats as its sister party. Since his landslide election victory in July, Prime Minister Starmer has sought to build a relationship with Mr Trump, meeting the Republican candidate at Trump Tower during a visit to New York in September. Speaking while en route to Samoa, Mr Starmer told reporters he did not expect the complaint to cause tensions with Mr Trump if he won the November 5 election. The British prime minister said that Labour volunteers had been involved in every US election to date. “They do it in their spare time, as volunteers. They stay with volunteers. That’s what they’ve done in previous elections and that’s what they’re doing in this one. It’s really simple,” he said.Tienphong.vn
