Japan calls on US to cooperate instead of imposing tariffs that damage businesses

On the evening of April 7, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru had a phone call with US President Donald Trump to discuss a series of new tariff measures recently announced by the US.

According to Kyodo news agency, during the phone call, Mr. Ishiba expressed concern that the new tariffs would weaken the ability of Japanese businesses to invest in the US - where Tokyo has been the largest foreign direct investor for five consecutive years through 2023.

The Japanese Prime Minister affirmed that it is necessary to promote a mutually beneficial cooperation model, instead of disadvantageous tax policies.

The call came just days after President Trump announced a new tariff package last week, imposing a base tax of 10% on imports from all trading partners, and higher rates on some countries.

Japan is among the highest tax brackets - up to 24%, making Tokyo one of the hardest hit.

Speaking after the phone call, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said the two sides agreed that the relevant ministers would continue to discuss the issue in detail in the coming time. He also said he would visit the US at an appropriate time to promote direct dialogue.

Over the past several days, Japan has been lobbying hard to be exempted from the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US, while emphasizing its positive role in investing, creating jobs and developing industry in the US.
