The family of Mr. Nguyen Trong Chiem, Quy Nhat town (Nghia Hung) has been recognized as a typical cultural family in the locality for many consecutive years. |
Nam Dinh is a land with a rich historical and cultural tradition. For generations, village culture, clan culture, family culture, along with the tradition of studiousness, respect for affection, and community solidarity have fostered a standard way of life, behavior, and communication between family members, between family and society. The traditional family model has many generations living together under one roof, with a close relationship between grandparents, parents, and children. Ethical education in the family is given top priority, in which core values such as filial piety, gratitude, honesty, diligence, thrift, solidarity, love, care, mutual assistance, respect for elders, etc. Over the past many years, the "long-term" movement of the whole people uniting to build a cultural life has taken building a cultural family as one of the core criteria to protect and promote traditional family cultural values, build new cultural people, and serve as an important foundation for building residential communities, villages, communes, districts and cultural agencies. According to data from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (VH, TT and DL), up to now, the whole province has 590,178/624,323 households achieving the title of "Cultural Family" (94.53%); 99.29% of villages, hamlets and residential groups have been recognized as "Cultural Residential Area". Every year, localities in the province organize more than 1,000 cultural, artistic and sports activities associated with propaganda, to honor exemplary families, studious families and clans... thereby contributing to spreading the good values of family culture.
In addition to the great achievements that the Fourth Industrial Revolution - the digital technology revolution brings, the strong changes in lifestyle, thinking, communication and living habits in the digital age are also posing risks of losing traditional family cultural identity. The gap between generations in the family is increasing due to the difference in digital knowledge; many parents have little time to interact directly with their children due to being busy with work and often using computers and phones in their free time. Children and adolescents are exposed to social networks, smartphones, tablets, online games, etc. early, leading to a situation of "each person in a world" while many parents lack the skills to guide and manage their children's use of technology devices effectively. Family meals and family reunions are gradually losing direct communication and sharing. Meanwhile, cyberspace is also a place that contains many harmful and counter-cultural contents, which can easily have a negative impact on perception, behavior and morality, especially among minors. When traditional cultural norms are no longer respected, cracks in family relationships are likely to occur.

Faced with this situation, all levels, sectors, localities and social organizations in the province have implemented many practical activities to preserve and promote family cultural values. The Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 34/KH-UBND dated March 23, 2022 to implement the Vietnam Family Development Strategy to 2030 in the province; which clearly defines the goals: Raising awareness of the whole society about the role and position of the family in the new period; building a prosperous, progressive, happy and civilized family; Preserving and promoting good traditional values and proactively adapting to changes in modern society... Nam Dinh Newspaper, district and city-level electronic information pages regularly publish articles and video reports promoting good family examples, spreading skills and methodsof educating children in the technology era, how to use social networks safely... Every year, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinates with the Provincial Women's Union, the Provincial Youth Union, and the Provincial Association for the Promotion of Education to organize propaganda and training sessions on skills to build happy families, raise children with positive methods, prevent domestic violence, child abuse, and mental violence in cyberspace... The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinates and guides agencies, units, and localities to strengthen the dissemination of the content of the Family Code of Conduct according to the motto "respect, equality, love, and sharing"; Organize activities: art performances, propaganda, visual agitation, conferences, seminars, talks, training, improve knowledge about family work, gender equality on the occasion of International Day of Happiness (March 20), Vietnamese Family Day (June 28) and National Action Month on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence, Action Month for Children. Thereby honoring and spreading the meaning of family warmth, promoting core family values, contributing to forming human standards in the new era.
In villages, hamlets, and residential groups, the construction and promotion of cultural values, family, and human standards are included in village covenants and conventions, becoming one of the important criteria for evaluating the titles of "Cultural Family" and "Cultural Residential Area". In particular, focusing on absorbing new cultural values of modern families, inheriting, preserving, and promoting traditional family cultural values and good customs in the residential community. Many localities have been creative in building typical "cultural family" models such as: "Learning families" in the districts of Xuan Truong, Hai Hau, and Nghia Hung; "Learning-encouraging clans" in the districts of Vu Ban and Nam Truc; "Hamlets, hamlets, and residential groups without law violators" in the districts of Giao Thuy, Y Yen, and Truc Ninh; "Inter-family groups" in Nam Dinh city - using Zalo groups to connect and share experiences in educating children and preserving family traditions. In schools, moral education, life skills and family values are also integrated into the curriculum. Many schools have effectively implemented programs such as "Gratitude Class", "Letter to Parents", "Family Day", encouraging creativity through art activities, music, folk games, creating a space for connection between school - family - society. In localities in the province, more than 70% of households have been trained in digital skills, many elderly people know how to use communication applications, electronic payments, look up administrative procedures; periodically organize family activities, share stories, experiences and lessons about family culture. In particular, in some public places in residential areas, free wifi, security cameras, and community activities have created an environment connecting digital technology and traditional culture. Many young people have actively used technology devices, produced digital media products to post on social networking platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube to introduce family customs, traditional dishes, etc., thereby helping to spread family culture.
In the digital age, preserving and promoting family cultural identity is extremely important to maintain good traditional values and connect generations. It is not only the responsibility of state management agencies but also the duty of each citizen and each family. It is the maintenance of seemingly simple but meaningful habits such as: a shared dinner every evening, greetings every morning or stories about ancestors for children and grandchildren, educating traditional communication and behavior in the family, maintaining traditional rituals of death anniversary, holidays and other cultural activities in the family. It is from these simple homes, where family ethics, family traditions and family culture are cultivated every day, that have been and are creating a solid foundation for sustainable social development in the digital age.
