Austrian startup Solar Container has introduced the SolarCont portable solar system, which contains 240 solar panels that fold into a large box the size of a standard container.

The SolarCont system can be transported anywhere in the world and deployed as a grid-independent power plant in just five hours, Interesting Engineering reported on March 21. The portable solar system is ideal for locations that need additional clean energy for events or rescue operations.

The SolarCont is designed to fit inside a standard shipping container, measuring approximately 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9 feet high. This size makes it easy to transport by container ship, freight train or truck. Once at the installation site, workers remove the protective outer casing and lay the solar array flat on the ground. With the push of a button, the deployment of 240 solar panels begins, unfolding like an accordion.

With a crew of three to four, the SolarCont can be rolled out to cover 720 square metres in about five hours. The SolarCont is delivered pre-assembled, fully wired and connected to an inverter, so the system can start producing electricity immediately. When finished, the panels are folded into a box suitable for shipping in a container.

The average German household consumes 4,000 kWh of electricity per year. This means that SolarCont can meet the electricity needs of 32 households. If installed in a sunny area such as southern Europe, the higher solar radiation would allow the system to meet the electricity needs of 50 households.

Increasing the power output at any given location is made easy by simply adding more SolarCont systems. This clean energy production system helps stabilize the grid and reduces dependence on fossil fuel generators.
