Nguyen Anh Minh shot 68 on the opening day of The Amateur Championship 2025

TPO - Participating for the first time in the world's oldest and most prestigious amateur tournament, Vietnam's No. 1 golfer Nguyen Anh Minh made his mark with a -2-stroke opening round at Royal St. George's.

Nguyen Anh Minh is the first Vietnamese golfer to tee off at the 'major amateur' The Amateur Championship.

In the opening round at Royal St. George's (par 70), Nguyen Anh Minh made an impressive debut at The Amateur Championship 2025, the oldest and most prestigious amateur tournament in the world .

Vietnam's No. 1 golfer scored 68 strokes (-2), temporarily ranked T24 on the rankings, out of a total of 288 athletes from 45 countries and territories participating in the competition.

Anh Minh's round was highlighted by 6 birdies at holes 2, 3, 4, 12, 16 and 17, interspersed with 4 bogeys at holes 5, 6, 9 and 14. This showed the ability to control the game and the commendable competitive spirit of the Vietnamese representative at the harsh course that has hosted The Open many times.

With a total score of -2, Nguyen Anh Minh is getting closer to his goal of entering the top 64 golfers to qualify for the knockout round (match play) to find the champion.

In the event that multiple golfers are tied for 64th place, a play-off round will be held to determine the next round spot.

According to the schedule, Anh Minh will start round 2 at 12:14 on June 17 (local time) at Royal Cinque Ports (par 72).

The Vietnamese flag appeared for the first time at The Amateur Championship.

Established in 1885, The Amateur Championship is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world. The tournament is organized annually by The R&A – co-run by The Open – bringing together the best amateur golfers from all continents.

Many names that later became legends have left their mark here, from Bobby Jones (3 The Open titles, 4 US Opens and 5 US Amateurs), to Ryder Cup champions like Sergio García and José María Olazábal.

Winning The Amateur Championship is not only a source of pride for any amateur golfer, but also a “golden ticket” to a professional future. The champion will receive direct entry to The Open, US Open and The Masters, three of the world’s top four professional majors.
