A man of Syrian origin went on a stabbing spree in a park in the French city of Annecy today, injuring four children and two adults.
Witnesses said the man, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and shorts, ran around the park by Lake Annecy in the city of the same name near the French-Swiss border with a knife and attacked people before being restrained by police.
The suspect was identified as a Syrian man in his 30s who was granted asylum in Sweden in April, according to French police.
"He wanted to attack everyone. I moved away and saw him rush at an elderly man and stab him," Anthony Le Tallec, who was running in the park, told local newspaper Dauphine Libere .
Four children were injured in the attack, including a 22-month-old baby, two two-year-olds and a three-year-old, Annecy's public prosecutor said. Two children and one adult are in critical condition.

The motive for the attack is under investigation, but there are no signs of terrorism. French President Emmanuel Macron called it a "cowardly attack". "The whole of France is shocked. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families," he wrote on Twitter.
France has seen a number of high-profile attacks in recent years. In 2012, French-Algerian Islamist Mohamed Merah killed seven people, including three children, at a Jewish school in a shooting rampage in the city of Toulouse.
In 2020, a Chechen refugee murdered a teacher in broad daylight, near his school in a Paris suburb.
