President-elect Donald Trump is considering Richard Grenell, a veteran of his previous administration, as a special envoy to help resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sources told Reuters . Trump's plan to nominate a senior diplomat tasked with "finding a solution, reaching a peace deal" was first reported by Fox News last week. A source said the person in charge would have "a lot of credibility." Grenell, a veteran diplomat , served as US ambassador to Germany from 2018 to 2020 and as acting director of national intelligence for several months in 2020. Grenell has advocated the creation of "autonomous regions" in the conflict zone in Ukraine and has stressed that Kiev should not be admitted to NATO anytime soon, a position shared by many in Trump's team. Supporters of Mr. Grenell point to his long diplomatic career and deep understanding of European affairs, according to Reuters . He served as the special presidential envoy for Serbia-Kosovo peace talks from 2019 to 2021. In September 2020, he brokered a deal that paved the way for economic normalization and helped ease tensions in the region at the time. In recent days, President-elect Donald Trump has announced new members of his incoming administration. Several of Mr. Trump's picks have made controversial statements about the war in Ukraine and opposed providing more military aid to Kiev. During his campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly pledged to end the conflict in Ukraine "within 24 hours" if elected. He did not explain how he would carry out the pledge, although he said he would use his “excellent relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to broker a peace deal. Trump spoke to Zelensky last week and told NBC News he would likely speak with Putin in the near future. Putin congratulated Trump on his election victory, telling reporters he was ready to talk to the US president-elect. While the Kremlin has repeatedly cast doubt on suggestions that Trump could easily end the conflict with Ukraine, Putin said Trump’s statements on the issue were “at least worth paying attention to.” It is unclear what kind of resolution Trump would push for. During the campaign, Vice President-elect JD Vance suggested that a ceasefire could be declared and a demilitarized zone established along the current 1,300km frontline, while Ukraine would be denied NATO membership.
