The last time I met him - Meritorious Artist (NSUT), Singer Tran Chinh (Tran Van Chinh), former Deputy Director of Tien Giang Provincial Cultural Center was in the last days of the year of Giap Thin 2024, when his health had weakened a lot.
Coming to wish him and his family a happy new year in the days before Tet, looking at us, his eyes suddenly lit up, perhaps wanting to say something but his illness did not allow him to utter a word, only his eyes still looked intently at me as if containing many things he wanted to say. Unable to say anything, it was as if his intuition had predicted that the once-golden voice of Tien Giang province would be taken to another world.
And today, he has passed away, leaving his family, many colleagues and audiences in mourning for the once-famous voice on Tien Giang's performance stages - Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh.

For many people, success in the field of art is an important inheritance from family tradition, but for Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh, passion and innate talent have brought him to many successes in the artistic path. He has received many awards in the field of art from the People's Committee of Tien Giang province and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh was born and raised in Long Binh, Go Cong Tay district, Tien Giang province. His memories of his hometown during his childhood, a dry, drought-stricken, salty land with many hardships, are beautiful memories that inspire his later poetry and music works. At that time, in order to pursue their studies, each student had to walk dozens of kilometers to the provincial capital of Go Cong to find letters.
To be able to conquer the written word requires each person to overcome himself with determination, will and strong desire. With the difficulties of that time, especially economic difficulties, few people could have imagined that a poor country boy would become a singer, author with many immortal works of poetry, music... In particular, during all those years of dedication, Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh had more than 30 years of management work as Deputy Head of Tien Giang Performing Arts Troupe - later the General Arts Troupe (1983 - 2007); Deputy Director of Tien Giang Provincial Cultural Center (from 2007 until retirement).
His path to art was a coincidence that sometimes even he could hardly have expected. After the liberation of the South, with the dynamism and enthusiasm of youth, he actively participated in many local movements such as digging canals, teaching cultural supplementary education, participating in mass art movements...
These movement activities also equipped him with many life experiences and he himself also had very real emotions about his homeland - this is one of the important foundations for his later compositions. In addition to traveling all over the region to serve the people with popular songs at that time such as: Weaving the spring road, Bamboo flute, New instrument ...
Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh began his "internship" as a composer of vọng cổ. His first works gradually took shape and were well received by the public, such as: Long Binh, My hometown, Standing on the homeland's canal, High-sorghum seeds - seeds of love, Returning to the homeland ... and his writing career also began from there.
From his enthusiasm and passion for the movement at the age of 20, he was trusted and assigned the position of Deputy Secretary of the Long Binh Commune Youth Union. With this task, he and the locals participated in movements to build his homeland after the early days of unification. It was thought that he would stay with the locals in this land, but fate led him to a new path. In 1977, when he heard that the Tien Giang Provincial Art Troupe was recruiting actors, the Captain of the Long Binh Commune Art Troupe wholeheartedly encouraged him to participate in the audition, because he saw that he was very passionate and talented in singing.
Although he was still hesitant because he was not confident enough in his ability, with his passion and the encouragement of his family and friends, he followed the captain to the province to audition. With his strong, sweet voice, friendly style and the sincerity of a Go boy, he convinced the entire art council and stayed in the industry until his working age was over.
In the face of the difficulties of the early days of liberation, Meritorious Artist and Singer Tran Chinh ate, lived and worked with the Tien Giang Art Troupe, considering it his second home. The staff of the troupe saw each other as family members and wholeheartedly supported each other in both life and work. Each person sometimes had to do many things to serve the performance, from acting, directing the performance to backstage... and he was no exception. However, he was still very proud to be a soldier on the cultural front, always striving and encouraging himself to overcome common difficulties to complete the mission.
With his ability and prestige in the industry, in 1983, Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh was promoted to Deputy Head of Tien Giang Art Troupe in charge of foreign affairs and management of the Troupe. Although busy with his new role, he still regularly appeared on stage to serve the people of the localities in Tien Giang province. In each place the Troupe passed through, people remembered this performance - that dance; this actress - that actor, but the last impression left in the hearts of each person after each performance was the voice of Tran Chinh. That is why until now, many people still remember the Tien Giang Art Troupe - later the Tien Giang General Art Troupe with the familiar name "Tran Chinh Art Troupe"!
Not only asserting himself as an actor, the name of Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh also regularly appeared in the Award Ceremony of regional and national competitions. Typically: Gold Medal (HCV) - National Professional Music and Dance Festival in 1999 with the performance " Going out to sea to look back at my homeland " composed by musician Nguyen Van Ty; Gold Medal - National Mass Arts Festival in 1979 with the vọng cổ song " Lôi riêng cho em " by composer Chau Thanh, Gold Medal for folk singing in the Southern region in 1989 and many other awards.

For Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh, passion and artistic creativity never cease. In addition to his excellent singing and performing ability in both modern and traditional music, he also participates in composing poetry and vọng cổ to express his thoughts and concerns in his works, hoping to find a soulmate and kindred spirit.
Many of his vọng cổ songs have been popularized such as: Hat dat nghia tinh, Cay cao luong, Tren hai tran tuyen, Chung mot uoc mo, Go Cong anh nho em thuong, Chieu thi tho, Hai cuoc doi chung mot bai ca ... many of which have been recorded and broadcast on mass media by famous singers.
With poetry, Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh has written hundreds of poems, each of which is a memory of childhood, of nostalgia through the flavors of his homeland that sometimes only remain in memory... Readers often find very real emotions of joy and sadness in his poems and all of this has created a versatile and multi-emotional artist Tran Chinh. In 2008, he released the poetry-music collection Night Calls for Love as a voice of the heart after many years of nurturing it and was wholeheartedly received by readers. In 2012, he continued to release the poetry collection - vọng cổ The Nightingale Stops Singing with very new levels of emotion and then the third collection of poems called Tiếng vá đáng as a thank you to life.
So many years of dedication to the artistic path are the same years that singer Tran Chinh has raised his voice and left many beautiful impressions in the hearts of the audience. Not only on stage, wherever his voice is raised, he receives much applause from the audience and many people always ask to hear him sing again. With a diverse voice and the ability to sing many musical styles from traditional, lyrical to folk, many people have mistaken his voice for many other famous singers. But he is still him - Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh with his own style, not someone else.
With his tireless contributions to the artistic path, the name Tran Chinh has entered people's hearts with the rustic and genuine features of a Southern man. With his achievements and tireless contributions, Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh was awarded the title "Meritorious Artist" by the President and was honored as "Meritorious Artist" by Tien Giang province in January 2016.
After a long time of working, retiring as Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh continued to be friendly and sociable with the locality where he lived. And during this time, he continued to compose poetry - music - vọng cổ with works expressing contemplation on life, on love... as the conclusions of a person with many years of experience in life.
Now, he has left this “temporary world” to return to his ancestors in another world. The news of his passing is like a sad cloud for his family, in the hearts of his former colleagues, in the memories of the audience who love the voice of Meritorious Artist, Singer Tran Chinh.
