Russia has asked the United Nations Security Council to hold a session to discuss French President Emmanuel Macron's idea of deploying NATO troops to Ukraine.

Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York on March 9, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Security Council Dmitry Polyansky said Moscow wanted to know more about ideas "that are rife with the beginning of World War III."

Earlier, on February 27, President Macron admitted that he had asked NATO partners to send troops to Ukraine. Later, the French leader announced that Paris would send troops to Ukraine if Russia advanced to Kiev or Odessa.

Tensions in Russia-France relations have recently escalated after President Macron announced that the West does not rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, which is considered taboo and could lead NATO into a large-scale war with Russia, a country that possesses nuclear weapons.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the West's deployment of troops to Ukraine would lead to the inevitable risk of direct confrontation between NATO and Russia.
