The Russian Defense Ministry said that during the above-mentioned exercise, Vulcan, Granit and Onyx cruise missiles were launched at a distance of hundreds of kilometers to attack simulated enemy ships in the Bering Sea, according to Reuters.

The Russian Defense Ministry added that the exercise involved ground-launched missiles, warships and submarines, and about 10,000 servicemen, as well as planes and helicopters.

The drills took place on Russia's Chukotka Peninsula and in the Chukchi and Bering seas, under the supervision of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov. Russia stressed that the new drills are aimed at protecting its northern shipping routes in the Arctic.

Last year, Russia said it planned to spend nearly $30 billion through 2035 to develop the Northern Sea Route, which runs from the northwestern Russian city of Murmansk near the borders with Norway and Finland to the Bering Strait near Alaska.

President Vladimir Putin highlighted the importance of the route at a summit of BRICS countries in South Africa last month, saying Moscow was planning to build new ports and fuel terminals as well as expand Russia's icebreaker fleet.
