The Russian Foreign Ministry said the statement was in reference to an article by Roger Boyes in The Times titled “BRICS expansion will worry NATO.”

Accordingly, author Boyes paints a picture in which BRICS is considered to be almost a military alliance rather than NATO.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, BRICS is not an international organization or integration structure, but an association of sovereign states based on equality.

This is a multi-functional strategic partnership based on three main areas: political and security, economic and financial, cultural and humanitarian cooperation.

Russia stressed that relations between BRICS members are built on the principles of equality and mutual respect, as well as openness, pragmatism and solidarity, and are not aimed at anyone.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that one of the priority tasks of BRICS is the formation of a fair and multilateral world economic system.

Since its inception, BRICS has advocated peaceful approaches to resolving international conflicts and enhancing multilateral cooperation on global issues, the ministry said.
