New Zealand plans to relax phytosanitary measures on some Vietnamese fruits.

On October 10, 2023, the Vietnam SPS Office issued Official Dispatch No. 222/SPS-BNNVN to the Plant Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) announcing the draft plant quarantine measures for some fresh fruits imported from Vietnam to New Zealand.

The dispatch stated that the Vietnam SPS Office received a notice from New Zealand on draft plant quarantine measures for some fresh fruits of Vietnam.

Accordingly, Notice No. G/SPS/N/NZL/742, dated 19/9/2023, stated that the Ministry for Primary Industries - New Zealand (MPI) is reviewing the pre-export phytosanitary requirements for the health standard for fresh rambutan imported from Vietnam. The proposed changes will remove the requirement for the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) to inspect each grower's batch and be able to determine batch uniformity in accordance with ISPM 31.

Notice No. G/SPS/N/NZL/736, dated 13/9/2023 with the content: Changes in pests requiring phytosanitary measures on fresh citrus (Citrus aurantiifolia); changes to adjust the requirements for phytosanitary specimens in accordance with ISPM 31. Specific regions or countries: Australia; Egypt; Peru; Solomon Islands; United States of America; Vanuatu; Vietnam and New Caledonia.

Notice No. G/SPS/N/NZL/734, dated 13/9/2023 with the content: Changes in pests requiring phytosanitary measures on fresh grapefruit (Citrus maxima); changes to conform to phytosanitary requirements requiring sample testing with ISPM 31. Specific regions or countries: China; Egypt; Samoa; United States; Vanuatu; Vietnam.

Notice No. G/SPS/N/NZL/733, dated 13/9/2023 with the content: Changes in pests requiring phytosanitary measures on fresh citrus (Citrus latifolia); changes to adjust the requirements for phytosanitary specimens in accordance with ISPM 31. Specific areas or countries: Australia; Brazil; Fiji; Mexico; Peru; Samoa; Vanuatu; Vietnam; Cook Islands and New Caledonia.

Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam - Deputy Director of the Vietnam SPS Office said that New Zealand announced its plan to relax the monitoring sampling measures and eliminate plant quarantine objects (mealybugs) for some citrus products such as: grapefruit, lemon, yellow lemon...; rambutan of some countries, including Vietnam.

Therefore, the Vietnam SPS Office requests the Plant Protection Department to study and notify relevant organizations, businesses and individuals exporting the above fresh fruits to the New Zealand market to give comments on the draft and meet the conditions required by the import market.
