From “falling in love” with the taste of the mountains and forests…
At the age of 24, when many of his peers are engrossed in trendy fashions, Duong Dinh Dung, born in 2001, has a special love for the traditional value of tea. This young man, who currently lives and works in Hanoi , can sit for hours rinsing the teapot, making tea, and enjoying each sip of hot tea with a strange respect.
Dung's passion is not for any ordinary tea. It is Suoi Giang Ancient Snow Shan Tea, a famous specialty of the highlands of Lao Cai . Dung recounts the first time he tasted this tea: "It was an unforgettable experience. When the hot water was poured in, a clear, pure scent like the morning dew of the mountains and forests spread. Taking a sip, the mild astringency on the tip of the tongue quickly gave way to a deep sweetness that lingered in the throat. I felt like I was drinking the essence of heaven and earth."
That initial "intoxication" urged Dung to learn more. He learned that the tea buds he was drinking were picked from hundreds of years old tea trees, growing wild on mountain peaks over 1,400 meters high, covered in clouds all year round. The tea buds were covered with a layer of fine white fluff like snow, which is why the tea is called "Shan Tuyet". They are picked entirely by hand by the H'Mong people, preserving the purity that nature bestowed.
…to realize the value of health and culture
The more Dung learned, the more he realized that the great value of Shan Tuyet tea lies not only in its flavor. "Tea, especially clean ancient tea like Shan Tuyet, is a wonderful gift for health," Dung shared. "Tea contains a lot of antioxidants, which help slow down the aging process, strengthen the immune system and bring alertness and relaxation to the mind."
For a young man living in a stressful environment of a big city, a cup of tea every morning not only helps Dung start the day with a clear mind but also acts as a spiritual therapy. It is a quiet moment for him to connect with himself, to put aside all the worries.
Dung realized that a cup of Shan Tuyet tea also contains a cultural story imbued with the identity of the Northwest region. It is the life of the indigenous people, the harmony between humans and nature, the inheritance of a heritage through many generations.
Big dream of a global Vietnamese tea brand
From love and understanding, a growing desire gradually ignited in the young man: to bring the story and value of Vietnamese Shan Tuyet tea around the world .
Dung pondered: "The world knows Japanese tea with its sophisticated tea ceremony, English tea with its luxurious afternoon tea culture, or Chinese tea with its thousands of years of history. We in Vietnam have a 'treasure', Shan Tuyet Co Thu tea, but it is still not widely known on the world tea map. This is a great pity."
Dung’s dream is not just to export tea. He wants to build a brand where each box of tea is not only an agricultural product but also a cultural product. There, international users can read the story of ancient tea trees, the majestic land of Suoi Giang, and the efforts of the local people when holding it in their hands.
"I want international friends to not only feel the excellent flavor of Shan Tuyet tea when enjoying it, but also understand its soul. That is the soul of Vietnam's mountains and forests, of Vietnamese culture," Dung confided with determined eyes.
Duong Dinh Dung's journey has just begun, and there will certainly be many challenges. But with his burning love for tea, deep understanding and youthful aspirations, we believe that Dung will be one of the inspirational ambassadors, contributing to making Vietnam's "green gold" shine on the international stage.
