The subtle blend of tradition and modernity in Phuong My Chi's performance created many emotions and received attention from the audience.
Meaningful highlights
Phuong My Chi recalls: "From the first time I heard about "He", I thought about bringing the material of hát bội and tuong cổ - a special and priceless heritage - into my repertoire. Although it is no longer popular in the mainstream of popular music , hát bội and tuong cổ still have cultural depth and special artistic inspiration, from the visuals, music to the stage language. Chi believes that this will create a meaningful highlight on the modern stage."

Music with a traditional cultural influence is Phuong My Chi's forte. However, behind the success of "He" we cannot fail to mention the creation of music producer DTAP. Phuong My Chi and DTAP have also been successful in music products that combine traditional culture with modern materials.
To develop Phuong My Chi's group's idea into the performance "He", the production team researched and applied a typical melody of Hat Boi and Tuong Co, then restructured and blended it into modern music. Traditional instruments such as Dan Co, Dan Sen, drums, Dong Lo, and Sona were recorded live by musicians from the Ngoc Khanh Hat Boi - Tuong Co Art Troupe, helping the song to have a true cultural nuance.
"Bringing traditional opera and classical drama materials into modern music is not simply copying the original. The work needs to retain the traditional spirit while still bringing new elements. Therefore, we need to consult deeply with experts to know which elements need to be preserved and which elements are allowed to be innovated" - DTAP revealed.
Meritorious Artist Ngoc Khanh, Head of the Ngoc Khanh Traditional Opera - Tuong Art Troupe, was the one who helped Phuong My Chi turn her idea into reality when performing "He". Artist Ngoc Khanh gave detailed instructions on traditional opera and Tuong in terms of music, costumes, body language, musical instruments and stage principles.
Phuong My Chi's group also worked with the project team "Heritage Journey - Hello Vietnam" to better understand the limitations and spirit of innovating traditional art forms; the differences in the way of singing and performing Northern classical opera and Southern traditional opera. All of this is to ensure that the performance on stage carries the true spirit of Vietnam's artistic heritage.
Meritorious Artist Ngoc Khanh was moved: "I was moved to tears when I watched Phuong My Chi's "Clown". I am very grateful to the young people who have joined hands to spread the traditional art that is gradually fading away; renewing, refining..., bringing the music and costumes of hát bội closer to the public, especially the young people".
"Vietnamese folk songs are so beautiful!"
If in "Em xinh say hi", Phuong My Chi was an interesting unknown, then in "Sing!Asia 2025", she is a "thousand-blooded warrior". Phuong My Chi confirmed that she participated in the program "Sing!Asia 2025" with the mission of promoting Vietnamese culture to international friends. She and her teammate, producer DTAP, made their mark on a stage that has many Asian talents participating.
When debuting at "Sing!Asia 2025", Phuong My Chi chose "Rock Hat Gao" and "Buon Trang" - 2 performances imbued with Vietnamese cultural identity. Not only showing off her powerful voice through the climaxes, this female singer also cleverly inserted a series of typical cultural details such as Bai Choi, Vovinam martial arts, Ao Tu Than and the image of the stork. Phuong My Chi's performance somewhat overshadowed her strong opponent from Japan. Her performance received a "shower" of compliments from the audience.
On music platforms, many audiences expressed their admiration for Phuong My Chi's performance through comments such as: "Vietnamese folk songs are so good!", "I just finished watching, I was fascinated by her stage", "Folk songs combined with rock are really great", "The stage was so hot, it made me explode too". Some people also praised: "The traditional performance combined with modern, no matter how much I watch it, I don't get bored", "The general level of Sing!Asia 2025 this season is very cool", "The Voice of Asia this season really has many surprises"...
Not only that, the hashtag "#This Vietnamese folk song - a song like a miniature Tet Gala program#" is trending up in real-time rankings on Weibo's popular search rankings. It can be seen that the topic of Vietnamese culture is receiving a lot of attention from international audiences.
After more than 12 years in the profession, Phuong My Chi has left her mark through many musical products with her own unique color, typically the album "Vu tru co bay". As young people growing up in the modern music industry, DTAP and Phuong My Chi are always aware that to go further, they must always remember their national roots. Artists must have a clear direction in bringing Vietnamese culture to the international community, not by shouting but by telling stories with Vietnamese identity.
"Modern music with Vietnamese cultural identity has always been the guiding principle for DTAP's journey for the past 6 years. Accompanying Phuong My Chi - a prominent representative of folk music - in orienting and developing music is an opportunity for us to continue spreading traditional values through a contemporary lens, bringing Vietnamese culture to international friends" - DTAP hopes.
"Chi's journey has just begun. Chi hopes to bring many cultural and artistic performances from Vietnam's roots to international audiences and friends, so that they can see that Vietnamese folk music is very rich and attractive" - Phuong My Chi expressed.
