The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has just issued a monthly climate trend forecast bulletin for the period from December 1-31, 2023.

Accordingly, assessing the climate situation last November, the meteorological agency said that there were no storms/tropical depressions in the East Sea. There were 5 tornadoes and lightning strikes concentrated in the southern region.

Heat waves appeared for a few days in Son La and the Southeast provinces. However, during the month, many places had the highest daily temperature values exceeding the historical values for the same period in November.

In particular, cold air (KKL) only appeared twice on November 6 and November 12, and was strengthened on November 16. Of which, the KKL on November 12 was strong, affecting most of the Northern and North Central regions, causing the average daily temperature to decrease by 5-8 degrees. Severe cold appeared locally in some high mountainous areas such as Sin Ho (Lai Chau), Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Dong Van ( Ha Giang ), Mau Son (Lang Son)...

The average daily temperature in these areas is generally 11-14 degrees. In particular, frost also appeared in the Fansipan area on November 20 and 25.

Also in November, the average temperature in the regions was still higher than the average of many years (TBNN) in the same period. Specifically, in the North, Thanh Hoa-Quang Binh, the Northern Central Highlands were 1-1.5 degrees higher, and in some places higher. Other regions had temperatures approximately the same or 0.5-1 degrees higher.

At the same time, according to the meteorological agency, there have been widespread heavy rains across the country, mainly concentrated in the Central region. Specifically, from November 7-8; November 13-18 and November 23-26. The main cause is the influence of cold air masses combined with East wind disturbances causing moderate, heavy to very heavy rain in the area.

In the North, also due to the influence of KKL, in the first half of the month there were a few days of moderate rain, heavy rain, and locally very heavy rain, and some stations recorded daily rainfall exceeding historical values for the same period.

The Central Highlands and Southern provinces have had continuous, widespread rain for many days throughout most of the month.

Increased cold air, more rain in the North

Forecasting the monthly climate trend from December 1-31, the meteorological agency said that the average temperature in the regions continued to be higher than the average temperature of the same period. In particular, the Northern, North and Central Central regions were 1-2 degrees higher; in the South Central, Central Highlands and South regions, it was 0.5-1 degrees higher, and in some places, it was higher.

Notably, rainfall in December in the Northern region was 20-50mm higher than the average for the same period, some places in the Northwest were over 50mm higher; the North Central region was 15-30mm higher, some places were higher.

Meanwhile, the total rainfall in the Central and South Central regions is 40-70mm lower, some places are lower; the Central Highlands is 10-20mm lower; in the South: the Eastern region is 5-15mm lower, the Western region is 5-15mm higher.

Also in the bulletin, the meteorological agency warned that this month, there is still a possibility of storms/tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea and possibly affecting our mainland.

Regarding KKL, December continued to increase in frequency, but the intensity of the waves tended to be weaker than the average of the same period.

In addition, moderate and heavy rains are still likely to occur in the Central region. Rainfall in the Central Highlands and the South will decrease, but there is still a need to be on guard for showers and thunderstorms.

The meteorological agency emphasized that this period is also the end of the rainy season in the Central region, but heavy rains due to the influence of weather patterns such as KKL combined with high-altitude easterly wind disturbances will still occur in the area, so it is necessary to be on guard against the risk of flash floods and landslides.

Notably, in the forecast bulletin for drought conditions this December, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated that from January 1-15, humidity will appear in the provinces of the North and North Central regions.

During the period from December 16 to 31, humidity is forecast to prevail in the Northeast and North Central regions.

The Central Highlands and the South may experience some dry conditions this month.

“In both forecast periods, most areas nationwide are in a normal state, except for the Northern region, which is forecast to have higher rainfall than the average for the same period, so the main state will be humid to very humid,” the bulletin noted.

Although this winter is forecast to be warmer than average, we still need to be on guard against particularly strong cold fronts. The Central region will have many days of heavy rain.
