That is the opinion of Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City), at the online exchange "Choosing wishes for grade 10" organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper in coordination with the Department ofEducation and Training (GD-DT) of Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of May 8.

The online exchange session "Choosing wishes for grade 10" had the participation of many experts and teachers in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, Mr. Nghi shared that the age of 15 and 16 is the most beautiful age for students, at this age students are still very innocent. As important as studying is, school psychology is equally important. When parents have high expectations and set high school preferences, it unintentionally puts pressure on students during this period.

"I am also a parent, and I have a child going through the transition from middle school to high school. I understand the common concerns of parents. Choosing the right school means that when your child comes home from school, he or she will still be happy and not exhausted because of a pile of homework" - Mr. Nghi shared.

Evidence from the fact that many students graduated from top universities, even with excellent degrees, still have to work in fields other than their major to make a living. Mr. Nghi believes that the main reason is that students have not found a major that they like, that is suitable for their abilities and strengths.

Mr. Nghi said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the school had many students suffering from depression for various reasons, the school had to find psychological consultants and coordinate with parents to intervene. This proves that school psychology for students is very important.

The principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School said that this year the school will still recruit 5 specialized classes: Math, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry (35 students per class).

Sharing about how to register for grade 10, Mr. Nguyen Phu Tan, Vice Principal of Binh Phu High School (District 6), suggested that parents should first carefully review the average score of the three subjects: literature, math, and English, and ask the subject teacher about their child's ability.

"Based on that, calculate your child's temporary benchmark score. Wish 1 is the one with a benchmark score slightly higher than your academic ability, wish 2 is equal to your current ability, and wish 3 is the safe choice, with a benchmark score 3-4 points lower than your ability" - Mr. Tan instructed.

Experts say that parents should not choose schools with admission scores that are too high compared to their children's academic ability. If they are unlucky enough to miss the opportunity to enter high school, it will cause great psychological pressure. Instead, parents should listen to their children's thoughts and wishes; make them feel secure; do not chase after achievements, choose schools that are within their children's abilities; prioritize choosing schools near home for convenient travel and to ensure their children's health.
