According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC) provided by the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), Indonesia's pepper exports in May reached 2,856 tons. This figure shows a significant decrease, down 15% compared to the previous month and marks the country's fifth consecutive month of decline. Compared to the same period last year, Indonesia's pepper exports also fell sharply by 38.1%.
However, in the first 5 months of the year, Indonesia still maintained an impressive growth momentum in pepper exports, reaching 18,556 tons. This figure increased by 18.7% compared to the same period in 2024 and increased by 76.4% compared to the same period in 2023. The main import markets for Indonesian pepper include: Vietnam leading with 4,400 tons (up 58%, accounting for 23.7% market share), followed by China with 3,504 tons (up 11.4%, accounting for 18.9%), the US with 2,631 tons (down 2.8%, accounting for 14.2%), and India with 2,212 tons (up 36.6%).
Indonesia is currently one of the world's leading pepper exporting powers, second only to Vietnam and Brazil in terms of output.
Regarding trade policy, on July 15, US President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with Indonesia. According to this agreement, goods from Indonesia when imported into the US will be subject to a 19% tariff. In contrast, US exports will not face any tariff or non-tariff barriers when entering the Indonesian market. This 19% tariff is considered to create a competitive advantage for Indonesian pepper compared to some other major competitors, especially Brazil, a country currently facing the risk of being subject to a tariff of up to 50% when exporting to the US.
