According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) citing the International Trade Center (ITC), in May, Indonesia exported 2,856 tons of pepper, down 15% compared to the previous month. This is the fifth consecutive month that the country has recorded a decrease in export output each month.

Despite the decline in May, Indonesia's total pepper exports in the first five months of 2025 still reached 18,556 tons. This figure increased by 18.7% compared to the same period in 2024 and increased by 76.4% compared to the same period in 2023, showing that Indonesia's pepper exports still maintain positive growth momentum over a longer cycle.

Among the main consumption markets, Vietnam ranked first with 4,400 tons, up 58% over the same period and accounting for nearly 24% of Indonesia's total pepper exports. China followed with 3,504 tons, up 11.4%, accounting for nearly 19% of the market share. Exports to the US reached 2,631 tons, down slightly by 2.8%, while India imported 2,212 tons, up 36.6%.

Indonesia is currently one of the three largest pepper exporting countries in the world, behind only Vietnam and Brazil. With stable output and a wide market network, Indonesia is playing an important role in the global pepper supply chain.

On July 15, US President Donald Trump announced a bilateral trade agreement with Indonesia. Accordingly, the US will apply a 19% tariff on goods imported from Indonesia. Notably, goods exported from the US to Indonesia will not be subject to any tariff or non-tariff barriers.

With this 19% tax rate, Indonesia is considered to have a competitive advantage over some other pepper exporting countries. In particular, Brazil is facing the risk of being subject to a countervailing tax rate of up to 50%. This could help Indonesia increase its attractiveness to international importers in the coming time.
