These days, along Ke Go Lake in Cam My Commune, it is not difficult to see groups of students swimming carefree. From primary, secondary to high school students, many of them do not have any protective gear, nor are they accompanied by adults, innocently jumping into the deep water. In particular, many students even recklessly jump from high places, regardless of the risks that may occur. According to records, this situation occurs regularly every afternoon, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The image of children swimming and playing carefree in the cool water seems to have become a part of summer here. However, behind those seemingly carefree moments is the ever-present danger of drowning. Without life jackets or adults accompanying them, many students risk their lives swimming in the middle of Ke Go Lake. HBN (Cam My Commune) shared: "The water here is both clear and cool, so many friends come here to swim. Even though we know it's dangerous, there are no warnings, so my friends and I often invite each other to come here to play."
Not only in the lake area, these days, when passing through the main Ke Go canal in Cam Due and Cam My communes, it is not difficult to see images of students playing in the canal. Notably, Ke Go lake is currently serving summer-autumn crop production, the water level in the canal is always full, with a depth of 4 - 5 meters. This water level is already dangerous for adults without swimming skills, and becomes extremely dangerous for children, especially those under 10 years old. The area near the drains and the foot of the bridge, where groups of students often choose to jump into, has the potential for unexpected eddies or underwater obstacles, which can easily lead to tragic accidents. Despite the danger, dozens of students still come here to bathe every day. Student TVT (Cam Due commune) shared: "Seeing many friends coming here to bathe, I joined them for fun. All of us know how to swim, so we don't see the need to wear life jackets."
Students swimming and playing freely in the canal poses many risks.
Ms. NTL (Cam Due commune) said: "Almost every afternoon, I see students going in groups of about 5-10 children along the main Ke Go canal to bathe. What is worth mentioning is that there are no adults to look after or remind them. Many children even stand on the bridge and jump off, which is very dangerous." Reality has proven that every summer, drowning accidents in children are always a burning issue. Many tragic incidents have occurred on irrigation canals, ponds, and lakes across the country, leaving endless pain for families and haunting the whole society. It is thought that families need to spend more time caring for their children, especially equipping and improving drowning prevention skills for them to avoid unfortunate accidents that may occur.
