In the Mekong Delta, which has great development potential but also faces many challenges in terms of climate change, labor migration and digitalization, combining STEM/STEAM education with digital transformation in general schools is the "lever" to create a quality young human resource that meets the requirements of the times.
From passive learning to creative thinking
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and STEAM (STEM + Arts) are no longer strange concepts in the Vietnamese education sector. Instead of teaching each subject separately, this model integrates knowledge, helping students apply it to real-life situations. This model has gradually proven to be effective when students enthusiastically accept and interact with it.
AtFPT High School Can Tho, the History department recently organized a project report session called “The pinnacle of recycling” for 10th grade students. Each class made two costumes typical of cultures in the 10th grade History program such as: Egypt, India, Greece, Rome, Renaissance, China (Qin - Han, Tang, Ming, Qing dynasties), or in Southeast Asian countries such as: Vietnam (Ly, Tran, Hau Le, Nguyen dynasties...), Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar... Even more special, these costumes are designed from recycled materials, with a message of environmental protection.
Ms. Le Thi Ai Minh, History teacher (FPT High School Can Tho ) said that at the beginning of implementing the STEAM model, both teachers and students were quite bewildered. However, with the encouragement and facilitation of the Board of Directors, along with the advantage of the school's facilities, teachers and students carried out the projects smoothly. The learning atmosphere therefore became more exciting and effective. Students not only quickly grasped the content of the History lesson but also experienced teamwork skills, artistic thinking, and presentation and performance skills...
Digital transformation - narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas
Along with STEM/STEAM, digital transformation in education is the key to narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas. Applying digital technology such as virtual classrooms, digital libraries, experimental simulation software, etc. helps students access global knowledge more equally.
Recently, in Vinh Long province, the province's student team won high rankings in the Open Robotics Competition, demonstrating that creativity and digital skills are systematically nurtured. At the largest STEM Education Festival in the Mekong Delta in 2025, Tra On High School (Vinh Long) won first prize with a project related to the context of climate change in the Mekong region. This result proves that students in remote areas are completely capable of creating solutions with high scientific value and practical applications.
Mr. Nguyen Phuc Tang, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City, said that as a central city and a driving force for regional development, Can Tho focuses on digital transformation and administrative reform throughout the sector. Applying information technology in management, teaching and assessment; building and perfecting the education sector database, connecting data within the sector and connecting with national databases... are priority areas.
The Department of Education and Training has successfully deployed the Smart Education Management Center to serve the management and coordination work in the sector. The work of calculating scores, student records and information related to students is mostly digitized. Smart technology devices are increasingly used in classes, helping to increase interaction with learners, the visualization of lectures and some applications for reporting, statistics... on management software.
School units regularly organize meetings, conferences, and specialized training seminars in both direct and online formats through popular applications such as Google Meet, Zoom Cloud Meeting, taphuan.csdl.edu.vn system, virtual meeting room system, etc.
Promoting multilateral cooperation
STEM/STEAM education associated with digital transformation is a cross-level, cross-sectoral story. Therefore, promoting multi-stakeholder cooperation is the most superior trend to help this process take place quickly and effectively utilize each other's resources.
The University - General Education linkage is one of the key models, helping to optimize advantages in terms of machinery, equipment and teaching staff. Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Director of Vinh Long branch, said that in 2025, the school has signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with high schools in the Mekong Delta region.
The content includes comprehensive digital transformation support for middle and high schools, especially schools in remote areas with difficult access conditions. Specifically, the school supports: Online teaching and learning system; online essay and multiple-choice test organization tool; multiple-choice test scoring system using conventional scanners built on artificial intelligence (AI) technology; online high school graduation exam review system with full subjects.
In addition to facilities, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics also organizes many human resource training courses, instructing teachers in digital transformation skills in the fields of innovation, STEM knowledge, sustainable development, etc.
Linking schools with businesses is also a direction that high schools in the region are effectively implementing.
In 2024, Samsung Vietnam sponsored a high school in Hau Giang (formerly) to build a STEM Lab worth 60,000 USD. This is the company's commitment to the high school whose contestant won first prize in the Solve for Tomorrow Competition - a playground that contributes to popularizing STEM, promoting the nurturing of technology talents, and promoting digital transformation. This innovative approach helps mobilize social resources, creating a modern practice environment for students right in the locality.
The Mekong Delta is entering a period of strong transformation. Today's generation of students, equipped with STEM/STEAM and digital transformation, will be the pioneers in building a new face for this land of great potential but many challenges.
