The G15 generation of the BMW 8-Series is slowly coming to an end after hitting the road since 2018. But before stopping production, the German automaker has launched a limited edition, one of the most special cars ever, not to mention the full-fledged M8. The 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage is a limited edition of 500 units, packed with features and finished in a retro color scheme inspired by the original E31 8 Series. So it looks like a farewell to the brand's flagship grand tourer.
This special edition debuted at Pebble Beach, where it was displayed alongside the stunning E31. Unlike the 2-door coupe of the 90s, the Edition M Heritage is based on the more practical M850i xDrive Gran Coupe. One of the key elements of this special edition is the paint. BMW has brought back five classic colors from the original E31 catalogue: Scarlet Red, Mauritius Blue Metallic, Cosmos Black Metallic, Oxford Green Metallic and Daytona Purple Metallic. These heritage colors are included in the price, along with a number of features that are usually optional. The retro colours are combined with an M carbon roof with tri-colour stripes, and 20-inch alloy wheels with a two-tone Orbit Grey finish. The special edition is also equipped with the M Sport Professional package, which adds dark accents, black brake calipers and darkened headlights.
Inside the cabin of the 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage is Alcantara, including the dashboard, door panels and headliner. The M Sport seats are upholstered in solid black Merino leather and Alcantara with a diamond pattern and non-illuminated M badges on the headrests. The interior is further adorned with heritage-inspired details, including tri-color stitching, Edition-specific M850i lettering on the cupholders and door sills, and a number plate on the center console. Matte carbon fiber trim ties it all together. Standard equipment includes almost everything in the catalogue, from the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System to the Professional Driver Assistance Package. Like the standard M850i, the special edition is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 523 horsepower and 533 lb-ft (723 Nm) of torque. This is the most powerful version of the 8-Series, surpassing both the M8 and M8 Competition. Combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system, the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
The 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage is available to order now, starting at $130,400, not including a $1,175 destination charge. That’s $21,000 more than the base M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, though exclusive features and details will likely make up for the price difference. BMW plans to produce just 500 of these special editions, with distribution limited to select markets, including the U.S. Production is expected to begin in November, with deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
