The Sabo Dam pilot project is one of the most important activities of the Technical Cooperation Project on Capacity Building for Flash Flood and Landslide Risk Reduction in the Northern Mountainous Region. The project is jointly implemented by the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and JICA in 14 northern mountainous provinces from 2022.

The Sabo dam pilot project in Pieng village, Nam Pam commune, Son La province is funded by JICA with a total capital of 8.2 billion VND, with an open concrete structure, 51m wide, 9m high, expected to be completed in September 2024.

Sabo Dam is built in the upper reaches of the steep river, helping to retain mud, rocks, and driftwood, protecting the downstream area. With the application of Japanese technology, this is the most effective technological solution in minimizing risks caused by landslides and flash floods.

This construction is expected to provide practical data for the development of technical standards for the design of the Sabo dam. This is an important stepping stone for the implementation of other Sabo dams in high-risk areas, towards the realization of the Disaster Prevention and Control and Irrigation Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

In the coming time, JICA will continue to actively cooperate with the Government and people of Japan to support Vietnam in disaster risk management in the coming time.
