Israel continues attacks across Lebanon, fragile ceasefire

Công LuậnCông Luận03/12/2024

(CLO) At least nine people were killed and three wounded on Monday in Israeli airstrikes on the southern towns of Talousa and Haris, as well as dozens of other Hezbollah targets across Lebanon.

Earlier on Monday, Lebanese authorities reported two more deaths in Israeli airstrikes on other areas in the south of the country, including a member of state security on duty, bringing the day's death toll to 11.

The latest Israeli airstrikes came shortly after Hezbollah accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and firing rockets at an Israeli military position in the disputed Shebaa Farms area in what the group called a "defensive warning strike".

Residents in Beirut also told Reuters they heard drones flying overhead at low altitudes late in the evening.

The attacks have left a ceasefire brokered by the United States and France between the two sides in increasingly fragile shape less than a week after it came into effect.

Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel is prohibited from carrying out offensive operations in Lebanon, and requires the Lebanese government to prevent armed groups, including Hezbollah, from launching attacks on Israel.

The Israeli military reported no casualties from the two Hezbollah rocket launches but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a "robust" response.

Hezbollah said the rocket fire, the first it has announced since a ceasefire came into effect last Wednesday, was in retaliation for Israel's repeated violations of the ceasefire.

Lebanon's parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, said Beirut had recorded at least 54 Israeli ceasefire violations since Wednesday. He urged the committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire to "urgently" ensure Israel stopped the violations.

"We are working with France, Israel and Lebanon through a mechanism to investigate and address reports of violations," said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

Kan public television reported that US special envoy Amos Hochstein, who brokered the ceasefire, had warned Israel about the alleged violations.
