The Indonesian Navy hopes to acquire new submarines by 2024 following negotiations this year between the country's defense ministry and several European companies, especially France and Germany.

On December 5, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali said that the force has provided some input information, including technical specifications for the submarine purchase contract.
Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta, Mr. Ali emphasized that European submarines are of quite good quality and the Indonesian Defense Ministry hopes to sign the contract next year.
The Indonesian Navy currently operates four submarines, including KRI Cakra-401, KRI Nagapasa-403, KRI Ardadedali-404 and KRI Alugoro-405, while the minimum requirement is at least 12 by the end of 2024.
Indonesia is negotiating to buy submarines from European companies, including Scorpène-class submarines from France's Naval Group and Type 212 and Type 214 submarines from Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
Naval Group CEO Pierre-Eric Pommellet flew to Indonesia on November 9 to meet with Deputy Defense Minister M. Herindra and discuss cooperation in the purchase of submarines.
