The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world's largest annual book fair.

Officially opening on October 16 and lasting five days in Frankfurt, a city in western Germany, this year's fair will bring together about 1,000 authors, publishers and speakers to participate in about 650 events on 15 stages.

Among the big names attending the fair are Israeli author and historian Yuval Noah Harari, best known for his book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, American writer Anne Applebaum and British-Turkish novelist Elif Shafak.

The fair has a large section displaying young adult literature, including a range of quirky, humorous works that are popular with young readers, such as Romantasy (a combination of romance and fantasy).

The genre is growing in popularity, often fueled by the BookTok social media trend on short-form video sharing platform TikTok, where authors promote their work and readers can easily provide reviews.

In particular, artificial intelligence AI was chosen as a main topic at this year's fair.

Authors and speakers will participate in a series of talks and panel discussions dedicated to this topic as concerns grow about the flooding of the market with poor quality computer-generated books and the potential for copyright infringement.

Leading authors, including John Grisham and Jodi Picoult, recently took legal action against OpenAI, a US company, for illegally using their work to train its popular chatbot ChatGPT.

It’s not all negative, though. Those in the publishing industry hope that AI can improve efficiency for publishers and could also be beneficial in some areas, such as scientific and research publishing.

In addition, an annual highlight at the Frankfurt Book Fair is the awarding of the prestigious Peace Prize by the German book trade to those who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of literature, science and art to the realization of the ideal of peace.

This year's prize will go to Polish-American journalist and historian Anne Applebaum for her latest book Autocracy Inc.

I came to Frankfurt - the world's largest book fair - with the mindset of learning so that I can contribute better to the Vietnamese publishing industry, not just to negotiate copyright purchases for my Saigon Books Company like the previous times.
