Action Camera: GoPro, DJI or Insta360?

Each company brings a different design philosophy, a different technological direction, and a different user group. So what is the optimal choice when considering buying an action camera?

In the world of recording technology, action cameras have become an indispensable tool for content creation, capturing journeys and vivid moments.

In Vietnam, the three most prominent brands today are GoPro, DJI and Insta360. Each brand brings its own philosophy, serving different users.

GoPro: Symbol of durability but “expensive”

GoPro is more than just a brand, it is an icon of action cameras. From extreme sports footage to travel vlogs, GoPro has become a companion for millions of users worldwide.

Hero 13 Black inherits that legacy with notable improvements. In terms of hardware, the device still uses a 1/1.9” sensor but has optimized algorithms, allowing for 5.3K video recording with true details and colors. HyperSmooth 6.0 anti-shake technology continues to be a highlight, helping smooth images even in harsh conditions.

GoPro Hero Black 13 has strong hardware and specialized accessories for many usage situations.

"GoPro is going for stability rather than innovation," says independent imaging expert Chris Rogers. "They're focusing on user experience and accessory ecosystems, rather than racing for specs." This is evident in their compatibility with Lens Mods, Media Mods, and Enduro batteries, which allow users to shoot longer and with more flexibility.

For those already invested in the GoPro ecosystem, the Hero 13 Black is a sensible step up, but the high price and lack of sensor innovation may be a turn-off for new users.

DJI: Outstanding quality... "poor" accessory ecosystem

DJI is known for its professional drones, and has recently entered the action camera market with the Osmo Action line. The latest version, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, shows that DJI is a formidable competitor.

The Action 5 Pro's standout feature is its ability to shoot 4K at 120fps, with a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops. The dual OLED screens make it easy to shoot vlogs or selfies, while its 20m waterproof capability without a case is a big plus.

DJI OSMO Action 5 delivers high performance along with outstanding color quality thanks to its large sensor.

"DJI is bringing the hardware thinking from drones to action cameras," says Potato Jet, a videography expert from YouTube channel. "They understand how to optimize stabilization, color, and durability - things outdoor shooters absolutely need."

Another notable point is battery life. With an 1800mAh battery, the Action 5 Pro can continuously record for more than 4 hours, far surpassing its competitors. The ability to quickly charge for 15 minutes for 2 hours of use is also very convenient. However, DJI has not yet built a rich accessory ecosystem like GoPro.

The unfortunate downside of the "rebel" Insta360

If GoPro is the traditional icon, DJI is the hardware innovator, then Insta360 is the "rebel" in the action camera game.

The company is constantly coming up with new ideas like 360-degree cameras, AI auto-editing, and flip-touch screens. The latest version, the Ace Pro 2, is a clear testament to that spirit.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has a flip-up screen, super high 8K resolution and direct AI image processing.

With the ability to shoot 8K at 30fps and 4K at 120fps, the Ace Pro 2 excels in resolution. The 1/1.3” (micro four third) 50MP sensor allows for sharp detail, especially in low light. The 2.5” flip-out touchscreen makes it easy to control the frame when vlogging or taking selfies.

Content creator Nguyen Ngoc Duy Luan commented: "Insta360 doesn't just sell cameras, they sell experiences. From filming, editing to sharing, everything is intelligently integrated and easy to use."

The biggest strength of Ace Pro 2 is its AI post-processing capability. Users can choose automatic shooting effects, color correction, cropping and publishing with just a few steps, especially useful for those who create content on social networking platforms.

However, 8K recording requires high-speed memory cards, and the camera has no internal memory, forcing users to invest in additional storage accessories.

Purpose of use determines product selection

According to a survey in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, 60% of GoPro users said they chose this brand because of its reliability and wide range of accessories. Vlogger Tai Day, who has used GoPro Hero Black 7 for 7 years, shared: "It is impossible not to trust a brand with such stable equipment."

Meanwhile, 70% of DJI users are satisfied with battery life and image quality. Mr. Tran Tien, manager of Jinmedia, commented: "DJI has an extremely good balance system, true colors and high durability, meeting high working frequency in harsh environments."

Insta360 is rated highly by 80% for its AI editing capabilities. Water puppet artist Tran Mai Hong Trinh shared: "Very convenient, I can edit and upload right after filming. The camera captures light better and is waterproof, very flexible."

According to consultant Tran Hoai Linh of CellphoneS: "Action cameras are inherently very durable devices. Users can use them for many years. GoPro always retains many loyal customers, DJI gradually attracts professional users due to its stable quality, and young content creators often turn to Insta360."

The action camera race is no longer a battle of specifications, but a battle of experience, ecosystem, and suitability for each user group.

Among them, GoPro is considered by technology experts to be the ideal choice for long-time users who need reliability and a variety of accessories. DJI has the advantage in hardware, battery life and durability, suitable for vloggers, travelers and sports. Insta360 is the choice for modern content creators who need high image quality and smart post-production capabilities.

Ultimately, understanding your personal needs - from how you shoot, where you shoot, to how you share - is the deciding factor in which of these three "big guys" you should choose.
