RT reported on August 27 that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed former Deputy Prime Minister and top European integration official Olga Stefanishina as the new Ambassador to the United States.

In a speech on the evening of August 27, President Zelensky announced that "the formal procedures have been completed" and he instructed Ms. Stefanishina to "fully implement all the agreements reached in Washington, primarily in the defense sector."

Olga Stefanishina served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice of Ukraine from 2024 before being temporarily appointed as Special Envoy to the United States in July 2025.

Last month, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) confirmed it had opened an investigation into possible abuses involving the Asset Management and Recovery Agency (ARMA), after a media investigation implicated Ms Stefanishina's ex-husband in suspicious asset transfers.

Although no formal charges have been filed, the pre-trial investigation was confirmed just days before Mr Zelensky abruptly stripped Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies of their independence.

This move by Mr. Zelensky caused a wave of protests from the people of Ukraine and the EU. President Zelensky was later forced to reverse the decision and restore autonomy to NABU and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO).

In an interview last month, Ms Stefanishina stressed that she had been divorced since 2017 and was “not involved” in her ex-husband’s business activities, saying their relationship was limited to matters relating to their children.

Despite the controversy, President Zelensky praised Ms. Stefanishina's experience, saying that Ukraine's long-term security depends on its relationship with Washington and expressing hope for "rapid progress in relations" with the United States.
