Coach Kim Sang-sik: 'Vietnam team does not give up'

In the match at Bukit Jalil Stadium, Coach Kim Sang-sik faced many difficulties in terms of personnel when he was absent a series of key players such as Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Nguyen Thanh Binh, Doan Ngoc Tan and Nguyen Xuan Son due to injuries. During the match, central defenders Thanh Chung and Bui Tien Dung were also forced to leave the field early, forcing the coaching staff to reluctantly adjust their tactics.

Meanwhile, Malaysia was strongly reinforced by high-quality naturalized players from Europe and South America. The Vietnamese team tried their best but still suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat.

The defeat against Malaysia has significantly changed the situation of Group F. With 3 points and a goal difference of +1 after two matches, the Vietnamese team is currently ranked second in the group, while Malaysia has risen to the top with 6 points and a goal difference of +6.

According to AFC regulations, the rankings in the final qualifying round are determined by points, head-to-head difference, total goal difference, goals scored, fair-play points and finally by drawing lots if necessary.

Therefore, to win the right to top the group, the Vietnamese team must win all three remaining matches, including the return match against Malaysia in March 2026 at home, which requires a minimum difference of 5 goals. If they only win by 4 goals, the team will have to rely on the secondary indicators.

Faced with a difficult situation, coach Kim Sang-sik shared: "We have to admit that Malaysia has become significantly stronger thanks to the naturalized players. However, football always contains miracles. If we prepare well for the return leg at home, I believe we still have a chance to make up for the four goals lost in the first leg."

After this training session, the players will return to their clubs to continue competing in the V.League and the National Cup. The Vietnamese team is expected to regroup during FIFA Days in October to prepare for the home match against Nepal on October 9, before playing the second leg away on October 14.

Before that, coach Kim Sang-sik will also lead the Vietnam U23 team to participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship in Indonesia in July and the 2026 Asian U23 qualifiers taking place at Viet Tri Stadium in September.
