On the evening of December 20, a rare moment saw Ms. Pham Thu Huong, wife of billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, appear at the VinFuture Awards 2023 ceremony.

In fact, for all three VinFuture Awards, Ms. Pham Thu Huong accompanied her billionaire husband to the awards ceremony. Her seat was arranged next to Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong. During the 2-hour event, she and her billionaire husband appeared on stage once to present flowers to thank the scientists who were members of the award council.

Awards for Pioneers

As reported by Thanh Nien Newspaper , last night, December 20, at Ho Guom Theater ( Hanoi ), President Vo Van Thuong solemnly presented the main VinFuture 2023 prize to four outstanding scientists who have devoted their scientific careers to the creation of "green energy": Professor Martin Andrew Green, Professor Stanley Whittingham, Professor Rachid Yazami, Professor Akira Yoshino.

In addition to the main prize, VinFuture 2023 also awards three special prizes, each worth $500,000, to scientists researching new fields, female scientists, and scientists from developing countries.

The special prize for scientists from developed countries was awarded to Professor Gurdev Singh Khush, an Indian-American; and Professor Vo Tong Xuan, a Vietnamese.

The VinFuture 2023 Special Prize for Scientists Researching New Fields was awarded to Professor Daniel Joshua Drucker (Canada), Professor Joel Francis Habener (USA), Professor Jens Juul Holst (Denmark) and Associate Professor Svetlana Mojsov (USA) for their pioneering work exploring the role of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which is the foundation for effective treatments for diabetes and obesity and promotes new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. The work lays the foundation and opens up new hope in treating more than 400 million people with type 2 diabetes, more than 1 billion people with obesity and more than 3 million people with short bowel syndrome.

The VinFuture 2023 Special Prize for Female Scientists honors Professor Susan Solomon (USA) for her important contribution to "Discovering the mechanism of ozone layer depletion in Antarctica", contributing to promoting the Montreal Protocol, an important effort to help reduce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

VinFuture 2024 season officially launched

The VinFuture Prize is the core activity of the VinFuture Foundation, a non-profit organization co-founded by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong and his wife, Mrs. Pham Thu Huong. The Prize aims to recognize outstanding inventors and researchers from universities, global research institutes, laboratories and technology industry corporations to honor groundbreaking scientific research and technological innovation, creating meaningful changes in the daily lives of millions of people.

The four award-winning projects have excelled against nearly 1,400 impressive nominations from 90 countries and territories around the world. These are all breakthrough initiatives, with profound impacts on the present and future of humanity, in important areas with increasingly clear impacts on the lives of billions of people around the world, including green and sustainable energy, climate change response, sustainable agriculture and food security, and health medicine.

According to the VinFuture Foundation, immediately after the conclusion of the VinFuture Prize 2023 award ceremony, the 4th cycle of the VinFuture Prize has now begun. The VinFuture Prize will launch an official call for nominations from 2:00 p.m. on January 9, 2024 to 2:00 p.m. on April 17, 2024, Hanoi time (GMT+7).

The award will honor advances in science and technology that align with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as ending poverty, ending hunger, improving health and quality of life, creating learning opportunities in progressive education, clean water, renewable energy, reducing inequality, and responding to climate change.
