During the excavation of two tombs in the Nördlinger Ries region of western Bavaria, Germany, archaeologists found many strange and rare artifacts buried inside. It is known that these two splendidly decorated tombs date back to the 6th century AD (around 501 to 600 according to the Julian calendar). Photo: @ Bavaria travel.

During the latest excavation, Director General of the Conservation Department, Professor Dipl.-Ing. Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for Monuments Conservation, said that his archaeological team had discovered many rare artifacts, including an ivory comb with detailed carvings of animal hunting scenes, and an African bowl with mysterious characters engraved on it. “These artifacts must have been extremely luxurious at the time,” said Professor Dipl.-Ing. Mathias Pfeil. Photo: @BLfD.

The ivory comb was discovered in the grave of a 40- to 50-year-old man who was buried with a long sword, a spear, a shield and a battle axe. Combs were a common burial item in the early Middle Ages, but were rarely made from ivory. The comb depicts a secular hunting scene with antelope-like creatures leaping away from predators. The bowl was found in the grave of a 30-40-year-old woman, along with jewelry, well-preserved eggs, and a weaving tool. A cross was stamped into the bottom of the bowl, and strange markings were carved into the rim that could be magical symbols or runes. Photo: @BLfD.

This bowl is made from African red cedar wood sourced from Tunisia, and although widely traded in the Mediterranean, this is the first example found in the Nördlinger Ries area of western Bavaria, Germany, demonstrating the ancient local population's access to extensive trading networks.
