On July 29, Mr. Shinji Kaneko, President of Keikyu Department Store Co., Ltd. in Konan, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, bowed deeply and expressed his "sincere condolences" to customers who suffered food poisoning after eating lunch boxes containing eel from the store last week.

The shop's products include eel prepared in the traditional "kabayaki" style: skewered, grilled and drizzled with sweet soy sauce and mirin rice wine.

Keikyu department store said an investigation by health officials found a type of bacteria called staphylococcus aureus in the product.

"We are very concerned about what happened and feel deeply sorry about it. We will fully cooperate with the public health agency's investigations," Mr. Kaneko stressed.

Tokyo-based restaurant Isesada, which operates a stall inside Keikyu Department Store, is responsible for processing and directly selling eel products at the store.

Consumed all over the world , eel is a particularly popular food in Asia. Relics found in Japanese graves show that eel has been eaten by the Japanese people for thousands of years.
