Implementing the direction of the leaders of the Customs Department and the Customs Branch of Region I on strengthening the prevention of smuggling and illegal transportation of goods across the border, the Customs force at Noi Bai International Airport has synchronously deployed many professional measures. In particular, collecting information to serve risk management for passengers and key flights, as well as increasing exchanges with airlines about passengers from countries with potential risks of prohibited goods such as Hong Kong (China), Africa, South America, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc. are given special attention.
Along with that, the work of checking and screening people and luggage has also been stepped up at the customs inspection area. Thanks to that, many cases have been promptly detected and strictly handled according to the law.
Most recently, at around 11:10 a.m. on May 28, 2025, through image analysis at exit gate A1 (Customs gate No. 2) and physical inspection, the Customs force at Noi Bai International Airport discovered a passenger entering the country on flight number C1/91 from Taipei (Taiwan) to Noi Bai carrying a large quantity of illegal goods. Specifically, this passenger hid 48 used iPhone smartphones in his carry-on suitcase but did not declare them to customs when completing entry procedures into Vietnam. The Customs agency made a record, temporarily seized the evidence and handled it in accordance with regulations.
More than a month earlier, on April 10, 2025, another similar case was discovered and strictly handled. The subject was passenger Mac Tuan Anh, entering from Incheon (South Korea) on flight number 7C2201. Through monitoring, the authorities found that this passenger had an unusual frequency of international travel in a short period of time, a suspicious sign of high risk.
When the passengers went through immigration procedures, the Customs officers screened their luggage and directly checked it with a metal detector. As a result, the authorities discovered that Mr. Mac Tuan Anh was hiding 64 mobile phones, mainly iPhones, wrapped around his body with tape to deceive the authorities. Immediately, the Airport Customs made a record, initiated a criminal case for the crime of "Illegal transportation of goods and currency across the border", and handed over all documents, evidence and the subject to the Police for further investigation and handling in accordance with the law.
The above mentioned cases show the sophistication and recklessness of the subjects who take advantage of the air route to commit violations. However, by strengthening professional measures, Noi Bai Customs is clearly affirming its determination in the fight against smuggling, especially the smuggling of prohibited goods and undeclared goods.
