(CLO) US President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine, according to US and Western media channels on Sunday.

Trump and Putin have spoken in recent days, a source told Reuters. Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday. Trump has previously criticized the large amount of US aid to Ukraine and vowed to end the war as soon as he takes office.

Republican Trump will take office on January 20 after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. Outgoing President Biden invited Trump to the Oval Office on Wednesday, the White House said.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday that Mr Biden's most important message would be his commitment to ensuring a peaceful transfer of power, and that he would also talk to Mr Trump about what was happening in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

"Over the next 70 days, President Biden will have the opportunity to make the case to Congress and the new administration that the United States should not abandon Ukraine, that abandoning Ukraine will cause more instability in Europe," Sullivan said on CBS News' "Face the Nation."

Mr Sullivan’s comments came after Ukraine attacked Moscow with at least 34 drones on Sunday, the largest drone attack on the Russian capital since hostilities began between the two countries.

Asked whether Biden would ask Congress to pass legislation to provide more money to Ukraine, Sullivan said: "I'm not here to make a specific legislative proposal. President Biden will demonstrate that we really need continued resources for Ukraine after his term ends."

According to the Government Accountability Office, Congress has allocated more than $174 billion to Ukraine under Biden. The pace of aid is almost certain to slow under Trump, as Republicans control the Senate with a 52-seat majority and are ahead in the House of Representatives.

On Thursday, President Zelenskyy said he did not know any details about Mr Trump’s plan to end the war in Ukraine quickly and that he was worried that a quick end would require major concessions from Kiev.
