Previously, on January 16, the US Senate also passed a bill, with a vote of 77 in favor and 18 against, to prevent the risk of a partial government shutdown, starting this weekend.

Under the current agreement, government funding for federal programs related to transportation, housing, agriculture , energy, veterans and military construction will run out on January 19. If approved by both chambers, the temporary spending bill would extend that deadline through March 1.

Votes on budget bills in the US Congress often reach a deadlock as both the Democratic and Republican parties try to take advantage of the risk of a government shutdown to pressure the other side to make concessions. However, the two sides still reach a compromise at the last minute to maintain government operations.
