Connecting the emotional circuit
The documentary “Thuy’s Corner” is still about stories related to the martyr - doctor Dang Thuy Tram. However, the new point here is that all the stories will be sent to the audience through friends and relatives such as Ms. Dang Kim Tram (younger sister), Ms. Dang Phuong Tram (younger sister), Dang Hien Tram (younger sister), People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh, veteran journalist Suzuki Katsuhiko (former Head of Akahata Branch in Hanoi ), poet Nguyen Huy Hoang (the person who arranged the translation of “Dang Thuy Tram’s Diary” into Russian)...
With the film “Thuy’s Corner”, the audience will visit the place where the memories and relics of martyr Dang Thuy Tram are kept; and hear the story of the third diary released on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of her death (June 22, 1970 - June 22, 2025). In addition, viewers will also hear stories about works of art with the theme of martyr - doctor Dang Thuy Tram such as the song “Thuy oi!” (composed by musician, Meritorious Artist Dinh Tham), the play “Dang Thuy Tram” (director, Meritorious Artist Pham Huy Thuc), the film “Don’t Burn” (director, People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh)... through the stories of the people who made the work.
With so much information and so many characters, the film crew had to weigh and measure to exploit the material most effectively. Director Huynh Thanh Huyen shared: “Making a story about a phenomenon that has been around for 20 years, the challenge for us was how to make it new. In addition, another difficulty was that the film had several segments such as the third diary, which was her student diary, the oil paintings, the play, the film “Don’t Burn” or the song “Thuy oi!” to the visit of Japanese friends, the translations of the diary... How can these segments not be disjointed but can be closely linked and complement each other's content and meaning, showing the appreciation of those who work on the topic about her. So that in the end, "Thuy's Corner" is not only a part of memory but it truly conveys the message of living, knowing how to love, knowing how to sacrifice and knowing how to preserve good values for today and tomorrow".
Director Ho Nhat Thao, co-director of the film, also shared: “When making this film, I realized that one important thing is to connect the inner feelings of the characters, to create a river of emotions. The river of emotions is the source of the film and also the message that the film wants to convey to the audience.”
Thanks to this direction, the film “Thuy’s Corner” has unique highlights, while still touching the hearts of viewers with touching stories and sincere feelings of the characters. Therefore, this is not only a documentary film but also a testament to the vitality of Dang Thuy Tram’s image in the hearts of those who remain. The memories are still there, still green in “Thuy’s Corner”.
Take care of every angle and image
The film opens with the image of the attic where the memories and relics of martyr Dang Thuy Tram are kept, and also the family's place of worship. Along with that is the song: "Seeing you off, I hope that one day/ The country will be unified and you will return/ Who would have thought, you would leave forever on the fierce battlefield, along with the age of twenty"... touching the hearts of viewers.
The film crew paid great attention to the camera angles, images, and arrangement of details to make the story both seamless and emotionally dense. “The crew used a Hollywood technique. However, this technique is for 90-minute films, while this film is only 25 minutes long. Therefore, we had to have our own “formula” to create climaxes or profound scenes,” director Ho Nhat Thao shared.
Emotional footage has contributed to the value of "Thuy's Corner". Cameraman Tran Vu Linh shared: “If we say the most difficult part of the filming process is probably the scene where the Japanese journalists make the journey from Dang Thi Tram clinic (Pho Cuong commune, Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province) to the mountainous area of Ba Kham commune, Ba Trang commune (Ba To district, Quang Ngai province). In this segment, I had to carry the camera up the mountain and film to ensure image quality. But luckily everything went smoothly. This clip shows a lot of emotions thanks to the camera capturing the faces of the two journalists, who, despite being tired, still exuded determination. The admiration and great affection of the two Japanese journalists for Ms. Dang Thuy Tram helped them have enough energy to reach their destination. Clips like that have greatly contributed to “Thuy’s Corner”, especially in affirming the love of those who stayed behind and of international friends for Ms. Dang Thuy Tram”.
Starting from the attic, the view becomes wider and wider, opening up a separate space for the memory of the martyr - doctor Dang Thuy Tram. In that vast space, the song that ends the film is like an echo from the memory, creating a reverberation in the hearts of the viewers. From there, the message of knowing how to live and know how to sacrifice will forever move and urge those who stay behind.
