Dr. Sergio Alfieri, Head of the Department of Surgery at Gemelli Hospital, announced Pope Francis' health condition on March 22.

Pope Francis will be discharged from hospital today (March 23) and return to his residence at the Santa Marta residence in Vatican City and will need to recover for two months, Reuters quoted Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of the surgery department at Gemelli Hospital.

The doctor confirmed that the Pope's health has been recovering steadily over the past two weeks.

It is not yet clear when the pope will be discharged from hospital, but the Vatican said earlier that he would come to the window of his hospital room after midday prayers to greet and bless supporters.

Since being hospitalized on February 14, the head of the Catholic Church has only been seen once, through photographs, and once in a pre-recorded conversation.

The Pope suffered several respiratory crises before doctors declared him out of danger on March 10.

Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said on March 21 that the Pope's health is improving, but after a long period of high-dose oxygen treatment, the Holy Father needs to learn to speak again.

Cardinal Fernández added that “a new phase” had opened in Pope Francis’ pontificate and the cardinal expected some surprises from him after he was discharged from hospital.

After being discharged from the hospital, the Pope will not be able to meet many people immediately. It is still unclear whether the audience with King Charles and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom on April 8 will be able to take place.

Despite his health condition, the Pope has continued to run the Vatican from his hospital room on some days, including approving canonizations. Last week he wrote a letter to the editor of Corriere della Sera , calling for peace and disarmament.
