The suspension was signed by Ms Roopa P, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education (Technical Sector) in mid-August, and will be effective until the internal investigation is completed.

According to regulations, lecturer candidates must have a doctorate, a postgraduate degree in a relevant field, and at least three years of teaching experience. If they do not have a doctorate, they must have a postgraduate degree, at least five years of experience, and must complete the doctorate within seven years of being hired.

Ms. Gyaneshwari was considered for the second category, which means that she did not have a doctorate but had to prove five years of teaching experience. However, after a complaint was filed questioning the authenticity of her documents, the authorities opened an investigation and concluded that she had provided fake certificates to deceive the recruitment board.

Based on the investigation results, the state government has issued a decision to suspend Ms. Gyaneshwari from work.

Ms. Gyaneshwari's case is not isolated.

In India, the problem of fraudulent degrees and certificates has existed for many years, spreading from education, health to the civil service. Many investigations have found hundreds of teachers, doctors and civil servants submitting fake documents to get hired. Faced with this situation, state governments have continuously launched campaigns to review and tighten the process of verifying degrees.

Recently, the state of Rajasthan discovered that many teachers and staff were using fake certificates to get hired or promoted. In Uttar Pradesh, hundreds of teachers were fired after their records were re-examined. Karnataka also uncovered a major scholarship fraud. Despite repeated warnings, networks of fake degrees, fake universities and fake medical certificates continue to exist, suggesting that preventive measures have not been strong enough.
