By 2030, the country aims to have about 48 - 50 universities training workers, a decrease of 15 - 17 schools compared to the current number.
This orientation is stated in the Planning of the network of highereducation and pedagogical institutions for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, recently approved by the Prime Minister.
Although the number of training schools is reduced, the scale of teacher training will increase to 180,000-200,000 students, of which 85% are at university level and 15% are at college level. The two universities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City will be upgraded to national key schools; along with 12 schools under the Ministry of Education and Training , national universities and regional universities will play a core role in the network. The schools train about 64% of the student population.
Schools under the Provincial People's Committee and some other public schools with a tradition of teacher training will account for about 30% of the scale, mainly serving local needs.
Some schools have strengths in technology, agriculture, forestry, languages, physical education, sports , and arts, and train specialized pedagogical majors, accounting for about 6% of the country's scale.
The plan also clearly states that universities of physical education, sports and arts will be merged into a multidisciplinary university or pedagogical school; or merged with each other or with specialized schools in those fields.
Pedagogical colleges will be merged into pedagogical or multidisciplinary universities; or merged or consolidated with other local educational institutions.
Technical pedagogical universities are restructured into multidisciplinary, multi-field schools with a focus on technology and engineering, but continue to play a core role in training teachers and vocational education lecturers, in order to meet the requirements of developing a network of vocational education institutions.
