At the end of 2023, from the capital of the national target program (CTMTQG) for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh district coordinated with Truong Son commune to implement a project on breeding goats for ethnic minority households in Truong Son commune. Accordingly, 13 poor households in Ploang village, Truong Son commune were supported with a livelihood model. Each household was supported with 3 female goats and 2-3 households were supported with 1 male goat.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh District Nguyen Quang Tuyen said that before handing over the goats, the Farmers' Association of the district had coordinated with the Center for VocationalEducation and Support for Farmers and Women of the province to organize training for households on goat raising techniques, disease prevention and treatment; and contracted with commune veterinary officers to support goat care techniques and supervise disease prevention and control. Thanks to proper care and procedures, the goats of households in Ploang village all grew and developed well. Many female goats have given birth, and the total herd has continuously increased.
Goat farming model brings stable income to people in Ploang village, Truong Son commune.
Mr. Ho Van Anh, Ploang village shared: “After being instructed by the staff on the care process, my family built a hygienic and environmentally friendly livestock barn. In addition to grazing the goats with natural food, I also added leaves to ensure that the goats have enough nutrition. The barn is built high, sturdy, and warm enough in winter. With the support of the staff, I have gained more knowledge and techniques in livestock farming. In the near future, I will buy more breeds to develop a model of raising goats for reproduction, considering this a direction for sustainable economic development for my family.”
Khe Ngang is one of the most disadvantaged villages in Truong Xuan commune. Lacking land for production, ethnic minorities here mostly rely on forests and forest products to make a living.
In order to create livelihoods for ethnic minorities in difficult circumstances to escape poverty, the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh district has supported the implementation of a livelihood model for 18 households in Khe Ngang village. Of which, 5 poor households were supported with 7 breeding pigs and 70 kg of feed, 6 near-poor households were supported with 6 breeding pigs and 60 kg of feed, and 7 households that have just escaped poverty were supported with 5 breeding pigs and 50 kg of feed. To ensure good growth and development of livestock, in addition to organizing training, the Farmers' Association of the district also coordinates with organizations and the authorities of Truong Xuan commune to regularly inspect and provide technical guidance on pig care.
Implementing the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction and the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period, the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh district has implemented a project to diversify livelihoods and develop poverty reduction models in Van Ninh, Truong Xuan and Truong Son communes with a total cost of nearly 1.2 billion VND.
Nguyen Xuan Viet, Head of the Khe Ngang Village Farmers' Association, said that in order for the livelihood model to be highly effective, the association regularly propagates and raises people's awareness of the purpose and meaning of the model. Immediately after handing over the piglets and feed, the households prepared full barns, took care of the pigs according to technical instructions and focused on cleaning the barns. In addition to the supported feed, the people took advantage of available products and planted more vegetables and bananas to feed the pigs. The association regularly checked, reminded and guided the households in the breeding process, and at the same time, oriented the households to proactively raise piglets by raising sows. Up to now, the model has initially brought high efficiency. The households have maintained and developed the breeding model, many households have re-herded for the 5th and 6th crop. This is one of the livelihood models suitable to the actual conditions of the people. At the same time, it contributes to "changing the thinking and working style" of ethnic minorities in economic development.
According to Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh District Nguyen Quang Tuyen, in order to achieve the goal of sustainable poverty reduction, the Farmers' Association of the district has coordinated with localities to diversify livelihood models suitable to the characteristics of each region, helping poor households, near-poor households, and families in difficult circumstances to gradually stabilize their lives. This is not only a "fulcrum" for the poor to have more opportunities to escape poverty, but the implementation of livelihood models also helps change the thinking and awareness of ethnic minorities in economic development and poverty reduction. In order for livelihood models to continue to be effectively implemented, the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh District will continue to promote propaganda and raise people's awareness of implementing economic development models, hunger eradication and poverty reduction; at the same time, continue to build and replicate livelihood models, contributing to job creation and increasing income for people.
