Reasons for price fluctuations
Crude oil inventories fell by 2.4 million barrels last week to 418.3 million barrels, much higher than the forecast for a 1.9 million barrel decline, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Gasoline inventories also fell by 1.2 million barrels, while distillate inventories fell by 1.8 million barrels, contrary to expectations for an increase. Experts say that the demand for travel during the upcoming Labor Day holiday is the main reason for fuel demand.
In addition to the positive data from the US, President Donald Trump’s decision to double import duties on Indian goods to 50% also had a strong impact on market sentiment. This policy was introduced because India still imports Russian oil. Although the Indian Finance Ministry believes that the direct impact on exports is not large, the spillover effects on the economy are expected to be significant.
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to weigh on oil prices. Russia has recently launched drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while Kiev has responded by hitting Moscow’s oil refineries and energy export facilities. Russia has been forced to adjust its plans to increase exports from its western ports by 200,000 barrels per day.
