Domestic pepper prices showed positive signs when they increased by VND2,000/kg on August 26. Notably, export turnover has stabilized and exceeded the 1 billion USD mark after just over half a month. This is an optimistic sign for farmers and businesses, affirming the important position of Vietnamese pepper on the world map.
As a product with more than 90% of its output for export, the pepper industry depends heavily on fluctuations in the international market. In recent times, businesses have continuously faced difficulties in key markets, such as the US tightening taxes or Europe changing regulations on certificates. These issues have caused the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) to make repeated recommendations to remove barriers.
Overall, VPSA forecasts that pepper export output for the whole year of 2025 will decrease to 220,000 tons compared to 250,000 tons last year. However, thanks to high pepper prices, export turnover is still expected to reach about 1.4 billion USD. After deducting the 20% tax from the US market, the actual value is estimated to still reach 1.3 billion USD, equivalent to 2024.
Pepper price today August 26 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on August 25 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price increased sharply compared to yesterday at 7,307 USD/ton (up 2.44%). In addition, Muntok white pepper price increased sharply compared to yesterday at 10,155 USD/ton (up 1.86%).
Brazilian ASTA black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,000/tonne.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,600/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $12,800/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,240 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,370 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $8,950/ton.
According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the 50% import tax that the US plans to impose on Brazilian and Indian pepper will reduce the market share of these two countries in the US market. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese pepper, with a tax rate of 20%, to improve its competitiveness. Meanwhile, Indonesia, with a tax rate of only 19%, is also expected to significantly expand its market share.
The Import-Export Department forecasts that world pepper prices will increase in the second half of 2025. Although the market is currently temporarily stagnant due to complicated tax policies and cautious buyer sentiment, demand from major markets such as the US is expected to explode again in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
With impressive price increases and export turnover exceeding expectations, Vietnam’s pepper industry is on the path to sustainable development. Management agencies recommend that farmers and businesses closely monitor market developments and apply high technology to improve productivity and quality, thereby maximizing opportunities from recovering global demand.
