Rebar prices edged up while iron ore fell on demand concerns and production controls in China.

World steel prices

At the end of the trading session on July 7, the price of steel rebar for July delivery on the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 0.13% (4 yuan) to 3,082 yuan/ton. On the Dalian Stock Exchange, the price of iron ore for July delivery decreased by 5.01% (38.5 yuan) to 729.5 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for July delivery on the Singapore-SGX Stock Exchange decreased by 0.64 USD to 95.25 USD/ton.

Iron ore markets fell earlier this week amid growing concerns about the demand outlook in China – the world’s largest steel consumer, according to Reuters.

Specifically, the city of Tangshan – an important steelmaking hub in northern China – has received a notice to implement production control measures for environmental protection reasons. Some factories in the area have temporarily suspended part of their sintering lines, a move that analysts say will reduce demand for raw materials such as iron ore.

However, short-term demand for iron ore remains relatively stable thanks to high steelmaking profit margins. Consulting firm GMK Center cited data from Mysteel consultancy showing that average daily pig iron production, a key indicator of iron ore demand, remained at around 2.41 million tonnes as of July 3, higher than the same period last year, although showing signs of a slight decline.

In Europe, distributors and traders are expressing concerns about the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which involves environmental requirements for cross-border trade. At Eurometal’s 75th anniversary conference, many members highlighted the difficulty in determining operating costs, which affects the ability of businesses – especially small and medium-sized enterprises – to make long-term financial plans. A German distributor said that it is now almost impossible to determine actual profit margins once the CBAM is fully implemented.

Manufacturing – including the auto and home appliance sectors – is struggling to keep prices fixed while also being risk-averse to fluctuating costs, with many warning of supply chain disruptions as early as 2026, when the new rules are expected to take full effect.

While green steel is seen as a potential solution to emissions reduction targets, actual demand remains low due to a lack of clear value recognition and support mechanisms such as financial incentives or green procurement regulations. Distributors also expressed concerns that current safeguards in Europe are not strong enough to support the domestic steel industry against dumping from abroad.
