According to records on June 18, many local durian growing areas are entering the main harvest season. However, the price of Ri6 durian sold at the garden is currently only 30,000 - 32,000 VND/kg, down by half compared to last month.
Dona durian is also not immune to the decline, being purchased at 60,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, about 30,000 VND/kg lower than at the end of May.
Compared to the same period in 2024, this price is also 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg lower, clearly reflecting market pressure in this year's crop.
Notably, although prices have dropped sharply, many traders are still cautious and not as keen on purchasing as they were in previous years. Many have placed early deposits to secure their gardens, but when it comes to harvest, they are still hesitant to buy their goods because export output has not improved, while domestic consumption is slow.
According to data from Chogia.vn, durian prices in three major regions – the Southwest, Southeast and Central Highlands – have not seen any new adjustments compared to yesterday. However, prices remain low compared to the average in early June.
Southeastern region: Beautiful Ri6 selected: 45,000 - 60,000 VND/kg; Ri6 in bucket: 25,000 - 28,000 VND/kg; Beautiful Thai selected: 76,000 - 84,000 VND/kg; Thai bought in bucket: 45,000 - 48,000 VND/kg
Southwestern region: Ri6 in buckets ranges from 25,000 - 28,000 VND/kg; Thai durian bought in buckets: from 45,000 - 48,000 VND/kg; Thai durian beautifully selected: highest 84,000 VND/kg, but traders buy in very small quantities.
Central Highlands: Beautiful Ri6 selection: 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg; Ri6 in bucket: 25,000 - 28,000 VND/kg; Thai Sau in bucket has deep discount, only 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg
Faced with the sharp decline in domestic durian prices and difficulties in the export market, experts recommend a strong shift to frozen durian products - a product that is officially accepted by China and has high growth potential.
Mr. Vo Tan Loi - Chairman of the Tien Giang Province Durian Association - emphasized: "Frozen durian helps reduce seasonal pressure, prolongs preservation time and ensures food safety, meeting the standards of many demanding markets."
This could be the key to helping the Vietnamese durian industry escape the situation of good harvests and low prices, while expanding market share in countries such as China, South Korea and Japan in the near future.
