Cambodia exports durian to China: Vietnam faces fierce competition
While the domestic durian market remains stable in terms of price, an important shift has taken place in the region when Cambodia was officially allowed to export fresh durian from China. This is seen as an opportunity to expand the market for the neighboring country on the Southeast Asian fruit map.
According to information from Khmer Times, there are currently 112 durian orchards and 30 packing facilities in Cambodia recognized by the General Administration of Customs of China. These units must strictly comply with plant quarantine regulations, with special attention paid to not using toxic chemicals or banned pesticides.
Several Chinese companies have been quick to invest in the Cambodian market, even signing a contract to purchase 15,000 tons of durian for the 2025-2026 period during a promotional event in Guangxi last June. In addition, they also committed to importing 20,000 tons of dried mango, showing the strong development in agricultural trade cooperation between the two countries.
However, price remains the biggest challenge for Cambodian durian. Khim Bunlene, founder of the King Durian Community in Kampot, said that to succeed in the Chinese market, Cambodia needs to improve flavor quality, ensure food safety and improve price competitiveness.
Cambodia is now the ninth country licensed by China to export fresh durian, alongside items such as rice, rice husks, cassava, corn, bananas, mangoes, longans, pepper and coconuts. Key durian growing provinces include Kampot, Kampong Cham, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri and Battambang.
This event is expected to create significant competitive pressure on the Vietnamese durian market, especially in the low and mid-priced segments. However, with the advantage of Thai durian quality, good transportation infrastructure and large-scale purchasing capacity, Vietnamese durian still maintains a solid position in the region.
