Latest pig price news
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, African swine fever broke out in Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province in October 2024, causing serious damage to farmers in the area. Since then, the area has remained at “high risk” for the spread of the disease. There are many reasons for this situation, of which subjective psychology and improper handling by the people are the main factors.
Ms. Vo Thi Ha, a resident of Yen Hoa Commune, is currently caring for 12 pigs that are showing signs of anorexia, fever, and constipation. Earlier, in early June, she had to destroy 3 sows and 8 piglets after testing positive for African swine fever.
If Ms. Ha had been more aware of disease prevention, she could have destroyed the pigs as soon as she discovered they were showing symptoms. However, she shared: “The pigs were still alive, the family couldn’t bear it so they tried to treat them. We only destroyed them when they died.”
Ms. Ha’s case is typical of the subjective mentality in disease prevention. Not only her, many other people also find ways to treat their pigs and only report to the authorities when the pigs are dead.
Mr. Phan Xuan Dung’s family in Cam Duong commune also faced a similar situation. Although he discovered a pig with symptoms of African swine fever on June 9, he did not inform the authorities but bought medicine to treat it on his own. Only after the pig died did he inform the authorities to proceed with the destruction.
